I'm surprised more accidents don't happen with zero-turns. First time out on one I wiped out a birdbath, hit a fence, and came close to going over backwards. They take some getting used to.

Reading that it sounds like the terrain was what put more risk into the accident.
Unless it was just his first time on a zero he could have flipped over any mower on the edge of a river and got trapped under water by it.
Sad case to see.
I loved my gravely when I had it. Never had any issues.

I agree, based on what the story says.

As for zero turn mowers, they do take some getting used to.

I hate mowing behind the patio here on our zero turn, angle has always made me nervous and is right next to the pond. I leave the rollover protection up and seatbelt on, hopefully if it ever does go over I can at least crawl out from under it.

Zero turns can be dangerous even with experienced operators. I worked for a nationwide landscape company for many years, and we despite our huge focus on safety, we would lose on average 1 operator every year. Those were always tough safety meetings to have with our guys.
We even had a policy of no ridden/ driven equipment within 10 of a body of water, regardless of depth, and it still happened.

I have two ZTM's. My biggest issue so far other than their terrible traction is one of my machines has a ROPS that doesn't fold down and invariably I'll run under a low hanging limb and it'll hit and I'll do a wheelie until the ROPS clears.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

Man that would be a tough way to go. At least he didn't get ran over by it. I thought that's where this was headed at first

Stay with your push mower until you can have a ROPS system installed on your ZT machine thumb peep
