So how do you use them ?
Dry/crush to a powder then add at the end of the cooking ?

The plant contains a poisonous substance, SAFROLE . In 1976 US Food and Drug Administration banned the use of Sassafras in making tea because of this carcinogenic substance.

File powder is made from dried sassasfras leaves. Put on gumbo before serving. That's the only use for it I am aware of.

leaves are dried and ground into a powder for gumbo and the roots make a fine tea I have been drinking it all of my life, tea is best when the roots are dug in the winter when the sap is down.
