Guys/Gals

No telling what effects tonights cold front will have on the spawn fishing, but I hit multiple lakes south of Abilene this week and the lip on the bank crappie spawn fishing is trying to start. Several almost limits caught. Granted they seem to move to the bank more on a calm day than when the wind blows hard, but the bite is there for the taking later in the afternoon after the sun hits the water. The water is 60-63 degrees pm on Hords Creel. Elm Reservoir in Winters, several city lakes such as Santa Anna and even Brownwood. It is search and catch on jigs and minnows. Jig colors working now are white/char. black char, and blue char-most of these West Texas lakes; you cannot go wrong if the jig has chartruse in it. The crappie will not visit the bank it seems if there is hardly any water temp. change.. As many have said on various posts you are going to have to visit 9-12 feet until they really commit to the spawn. Sizes of crappie are 3/4 to 1.25lbs.. Get ready and lower the boom on them once the front and its effects are over with.

Jack at Jacks Bait near Brownwood State Park said the crappie at Lake Brownwood had made a big move to shallow water 4 days ago (Monday/Tuesday).

I also fished the small lakes at Ballinger to the west.

Don't forget these small lakes. If you don't know about them contact Texas Parks and Wildlife and they can help you identify the location of many lakes all around Abilene in all directions.

Good Fishing

Why dont you try and get as many people as possible on these small lakes to make it rough on us that have enjoyed fishing them for years. Go ahead and name them while you are at it next time. Congrats

Great report Dabber, always good to hear some local reports. Especially on some of the smaller big country lakes.

Elpatoloco amd Jig Man

For the benefit of the nearby servicemen at Dyess AFB, those fishing from kayaks or floating devices, plus multiple Seniors and especially the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts wanting to fish, here is the number contact for the Abilene , Texas Parks and Wildlife-Fisheries Department that has more detailed information and maybe a publication called Big Country Lakes and Ponds. (325-692-0921)--Abilene Number

Mud Dabber its called Big Country Anglers Guide. Nice little publication TP&W has out, great for anglers wanting to venture outside of Abilene. Nice little Lakes to fish especially for tube, kayak fishing and small boats. They are definitely no secret as Ive fished many of them for years growing up. (Mainly in a tube)
For you young anglers wanting to get on the water that dont have the budget for a kayak or boat go by and see Smoothie over at Abilene Tarp, he still makes hand built fishing tubes out of quality materials with true truck tubes that will last a lifetime if taken care of.
