I’m looking at buying a rod for crappie fishing. What’s the most versatile crappie rod if I’m only going to buy one rod?

I don't think you can buy just one....lol...but regardless of brand I like a 7 ft. light (not ultra-lite) rod with a fast tip. You can fish brush piles, shoot docks, and cast with it. As far as what brand to buy it just depends how far down into you pocket you're willing to go. This is just my preference....I'm sure you'll get lots of recommendations.

Let’s stay under $200. Brands and models would be helpful as I have no clue when it comes to crappie.

6'-7' light action spinning rod. G-rods are great but to start out I would recommend Bass Pro's Crappie Maxx rods. They are what I use and are a third of the price of a G-rod. [Linked Image]

Yep, 7' light action spinning rod covers most stuff...Then cut grass until you can get a 10 or 11 footer for the harder to reach stuff...That will cover most of it. 5 footers work good for inside fishing.

if your fishing from a boat 8-9 feet from the bank 6-7 feet. Bass pro shop and cabelas has the Crappie Maxx rods from $30-$50.
Get a Shimano, Diawa, Phluger, spinning reel in the 1000 series for about $25-30....youre all set...

If you are just getting into crappie fishing, you will soon see that one rod is never enough and want to add to your collection. I would suggest going with a decent quality rod at a reasonable price. You might try a B'n'M Sam Heaton Super Sensitive in 7 ft. It is good for jigging and for casting. They can be bought in several places including Wally World for about $35. Add a Shimano or Pflueger spinning reel to it and you will have a really nice set up at a very affordable price.

No love for Pro angler ?

I have 7-8 pro anglers , and one G-rod. It is a nice rod , but if I had to replace my rods, the new ones would be pro
anglers,

your mileage may vary
good luck
