Just wondering if anyone has recently fished at the Lake Whitney dam?
I am planning to go there this coming weekend to try my luck
I have checked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website. Seems like they are releasing some water but flood gates are currently closed. Can some please confirm this ?
I usually fish at Denison dam which is Red River by Lake Texoma. They had the flood gates open for last 2 weeks and striper fishing was really good.
Was catching the limit within couple of hours.
Here are some pics from the Lake texoma dam last week.

Lake Whitney level has dropped almost 3 feet in last 2 weeks. They are letting out water thru turbines gor the electricity. Doubt that flood gate would be open.

Whitney flood gates are always closed except for severe flooding. They normally release 25 cfs through sluice gates through the bottom of the dam all the time in addition to power generation.

Oh I didnt know that. Thanks for the details.

Here's a question for you guys... I have caught striper behind the dam when water has been released and again after they stopped releasing and fishing between the break wall and dam for trapped fish. Now, all these fish that come up river during the water release what do they do during times of regular water flow. Will they hang out in deeper holes in the shallower part of the river or will they move down into the lower lake Brazos areas north of Waco. We wake board on the river all the time but I have never fished it. Was always curious if the striper in that system were catchable.

They might make it down to waco but most of the striper I catch down there are hybirds and therefore probably out of lake waco. From my kayaking experience the closer you get to whitney dam the non hybrid striper population goes up. By the time you get down to Marlin I've caught none hybrid or pure there. I've always needed current for them to bite also, once you get into areas on the river that are slack water either they just aren't there or are tough to get to bite not really sure which.

There used to be a guide on here who made a living off catching big stripers on the Brazos, which I always assumed was below Lake Whitney. Couldve been north too. That said, ive never had any kind of success and it doesnt seem like there is quite the concentration near the dam like at Texoma.
