Farm and ranch stores and nurseries sell coyote and bobcat urine to keep pests away. Borrow (OK, take, because I doubt she'll want it back) a tampon from your wife . Staple it to a rafter by the string and dip the tip in the urine. (That's an important order of operation. Staple THEN dip.) They may not want to live in your attic if they think a coyote or bobcat also lives up there.

We had a Family of Racoons 3 yrs ago . We waited for the babies to get old enough to go outside with the mom then we blocked their access to the attic . Ended up having to shoot them one by one because they were very determined to get back into the house . They were able to destroy a roof vent to get back in . I used a 22 cal pellet gun , 1100 fps head shots . They are tough to shoot in the attic because of the difficulty of aiming the gun in tight quarters and not drop the gun and run every time momma charges at you . The mother would charge for about 10 ft while growling like a cat , I was certain I was going to need rabies shots before it was done .
Then we had to have the feces cleaned out which is considered hazardous material and very dangerous to breath the dust .

Try some lights and a radio tuned to a talk station. Be careful with moth balls. You could end up with your whole house smelling like moth balls for months. (Don't ask how I know this.) Of course, you will need to fix the entry point

Update: Well, it looks like lights and mothballs have worked. Thanks for all the ideas - mostly. Took a 15' piece of PVC and made the worlds longest selfie stick, and looked all over the attic, and I think they're gone. Haven't heard anything since we put the lights and mothballs up there. Attic is lit up like a Friday football stadium, and moths drop out of the sky just for flying over the house. Going to block the access this weekend.
