Looks like we have a little disagreement between blacks and crappie. Which is it?

bass and crappie are running the same this year, it seems. usually sandbass start their runs up the creeks to spawn, followed very closely by crappie spawn, then bass, then the whiskerfish.
i caught 2 male crappie up shallow in 4 hours on Tawakoni a few days ago.
yesterday, I caught 6 male crappie up shallow on Cypress Springs.

and both lakes it was in one specific area.... the big wave hasnt pushed up yet. guess the water column below the surface still hasnt warmed up enough. I need to get a thermometer I can weigh down and measure the temps. it has me baffled.

It always seems like the crappie are about finished when the bluegill move in. Crappie and bass overlap with crappie generally starting a little earlier than bass. I like to divide a large lake into 1/3 zones North, mid, and South as timing will vary in each zone.

Someone should add the water temps at which each species spawns. Include bluegill. 'Cause I think they spawn the latest. If you start seeing bluegill beds, you're too late. smile

This is my general rule. Sandies start around 55-58 peak around 60-65 (this is a rough estimate, sandies are a lot more unpredictable than crappie and bass), crappie start around 60, peaks around 63-66, Bass usually start around 62-65 and peak around 68-70, catfish start around 70 and peak around 75-80, but you can often find cats shallow prior to the spawn chasing shad. Theres overlap between all because they dont all spawn at once. But as a general rule they start at different times.

on belton ,, . shad,,, carp , black bass, crappie and white bass around same time. lotta fish go eat those carp eggs. couldnt say when the catfish spawn. shad spawn usually last around 5 weeks.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

bluegill spawns are a little different, they dont spawn once a year like crappie, once the water temp reaches around 60 they spawn monthly until the water cools back down. Bluegill spawn from April-October a lot of times.
