I had a ton of baseball and basketball cards. Wasn't worth my time once I tried selling these things, so I just tossed them in the trash. Jordans, Ryans, Robinsons, Cansecos, whatever - consider that my contribution to help with the "only 1,983,460 remaining" disclaimer.

From what I see on Pawn Stars, they have to be in pristine condition to be worth much. The exception would be if they're super rare. In fact, that's where I would go to sell them. You might get on TV; maybe even meet Chum Lee.

Lots of people out there buy Baseball and other sports cards. I bought over 800 today from a guy. The problem is most people that don't know anything about sports cards value their collections WAAAAAAAY TO HIGH! During the 80's and early 90's the prices for over produced cards were sky high! Then the market crashed in the mid 90's but people still think their cards are worth what they were back then.
The market now is focused mostly on vintage pre 1970's stuff, graded stuff, low numbered serial number stuff, rare inserts from the 1990's, and autographs. That stuff is bringing more that it ever has while the raw cards from the late 80's and 90's card boom have bottomed out and have now started to take a slight upward turn in value but they are still very low. Unopened boxes from that same era are starting to increase in value as well but very slowly. People are starting to want to relive the magic they saw as a kid opening all those colorful packs of cards and more and more of those boxes are getting busted open every day now. I use to be able to go into any antique mall and find unopened boxes of 80's and 90's stuff all the time for under $10. Not anymore though. Now the only place I find them is at large trade shows and card shops. That stuff is disappearing by the pallet every day.
Anything Michael Jordan and Tom Brady sells really well. Mike Trout is closing in on those two as well.
If you were closer I would be willing to go through them and give you a rough estimate on real world value of them.

If you have 20k worth of cards you might be able to sell it as a collection and if you got 10k id tip my hat to you. One problem is to get the most value for the cards you have to sell them individually and find people interested in a certain players or teams. For example, the buffalo bills are my second favorite team behind the cowboys (ironic i know). If you had a andre reed or jim kelly insert card worth 6 bucks in book value, id probably give you close to that 6 bucks because i want to add it to my personal collection and it is a fair price for a cool card. Finding specific collectors and selling individual cards sucks too. In addition, the move to graded cards has pretty much screwed any market for selling a collection. Like mentioned by someone else, a graded card in in mint condition is what collectors are looking for or numbered cards. Ive got plenty of favre rookies and id be looking to get a few dollars per card realistically because they are just based average condition cards. If i have a gem mint? Well id get way more.
Some players like jordan, james, brady and other legends will always have a market and command a good resale value, but you probably wont make money because you have to purchase high. Even randomly pulling a card of them is rare because they are often loaded with low tier rookies.
In short, treat cards as beanie babies. Collect them for fun, maybe pull a awesome card and enjoy them for that. Dont treat it as investment to make money, and if you do wish to sell then keep expectations very temlered unless you have awesome numbered, graded of legendary players in that collection.
I only lie when I tell the truth.
