The Ray Hubbard Bass Club held our second members only tournament of 2019 last Saturday March 9th at Cypress Springs Lake. Light rain fell early in the day but the wind was blowing right from the start. About 9:30 a large thunderstorm blew in with heavy rain, wild wind gusts and thunder and lightning. I hope our members did like we did and took cover in an open boat house. It lasted about 20 minutes. After that, the wind behind the storm was fierce and moving around the lake became treacherous, despite the relatively small size of Cypress. Most everyone I talked with at the end of the day said they had never seen it that rough. Fishing was pretty good before the storm, but we heard from many teams that bites got very scarce after the storm. Despite the wild weather, 45 teams came out to fish with us. Most teams weighed fish but the average size was not what most were hoping for. When all our little green friends had been to the scales, the team of Adam Vesely and Taylor Gauntt came out on top with a five fish stringer that weighed 13.78 pounds. That included big bass of the event, a 5.29 hawg. Mike and Mandy Kizer had one for 1.80 When your day starts out pulling in to a nice looking parking spot that puts you ankle deep in mud, well, it may not be your day... Two lost fish, a huge thunderstorm, three speared waves later, we were happy to have this one for 2.50 and make it out with our sanity and ourselves still in one piece. Big John and Robert Hitt had one for 2.57 Jason and Tiffiny Letterman had two for 4.52 (both caught by her) Brig Norwood and Tony Bryant had three for 4.81 James and Shellye Crawford had three for 4.89. Shellye caught them all (a theme here?) and did not allow James to have anything but his arm in the picture.

In the not so coveted thanks for coming, first out of the money position were defending AOY's Vince Burt and Mark Werner. They weighed a limit for 10.83 Finishing sixth with a limit for 10.98 were Clark Crenshaw and Roddy Bieber Finishing fifth were our congenial hosts of Illustrious Action Baits fame Russell Olds and Matt Jackson. They had five for 11.28 with a 4.34 kicker Finishing fourth with a solid limit of 11.96 were Dennis and Damon Machost Finishing third were Ronnie Manning and Matt Sprague with five that weighed 13.19 Since both members of our second place team are on the lam for parole violations, they refused to take a picture. Jerry Brown and Tony Schnurr weighed four fish for 13.23Here are your winners! Adam Vesely and Taylor Gauntt had a great day on a tough lake with five for 13.78 to take the victory That included Big Bass of the tournament with a 5.29 toad. Congratulations guys! I would like to say thanks to Tournament Directors Russell Olds who handled registration and live well checks in the morning. Thanks as well to Paul Spann, Shellye Crawford and James Crawford for handling the weigh in. Great job by Cameron Laing keeping the money straight. On a personal note, I and my partner Chris would like to say thank you to James Sharp and Brian Brooks for pulling Chriss truck out of the mud bog I got it stuck in. Our next tournament is Saturday April 13th at Lake Fork. We will be going out of Popes Landing. Hope to see you there!
