Hey guys, tell me how this works. All these guys have a top of the line bass boat, and then they sell it every year. What's up with that? A staggering amount are sitting 6 months to a year on these boats before they resell. For instance. " My 2019 came in, gotta get the 2018 with 150 hours sold asap." The 2018 model sits for sale for 6 months while they fish in the new rig. Some guys are sponsored and obligated I get that. But like I know alot of guides are just taking an absolute beating on turning in the boat every year. By the time your used to it and have it rigged out its time to start the vicious cycle over. I mean are they just taking all that massive depreciation on their investments non stop? To me it just seems crazy. Do these guys just love to be buried in a mountain of debt? Gimme your thoughts and insights please

If your sponsored by th marine. Mercury. Yamaha etc. or even better yet a boat dealership. Your using that boat a year and selling it and its costing you zero to 5000 and your always in a new one. Its a no brainer if you can get the hook up.

A lot depends on how much you use your boat.
First off my home and and mine and wifes vehicles are both paid off. I waited a lot longer than I wanted to to get a brand new boat. But even if I didnt This is how it would work for me.
My 2018 Ive just had little over a year and its close to 180 hours. I fish 3-4 days a week. I have to trade it in after 1-1.5 years or Im going to be stuck with a 4-5 year old boat with 700 hours. By year 6 it would surely be on its last few strings power head. Then what? Spend 10-12k to rebuild it? Im about to order my new boat soon. Essentially I look At it like a car lease. I make a few extra payments a year to keep above the value and will chalk it up to the price Im willing to pay to do what I love.
For the guys that put 50 hours a year on a boat I can See how people would shake their head for getting 60 k in debt. Might as well find a great used boat no more than its used.

It all depends on whether a person has a REAL DEAL or not. Some guys are actually making money. Some are all about breaking even or taking a minimal loss $5k +-. Then there are those others that take serious beatings, just to run with the big boys. It all comes down to selling products, if you want to be in the 1st. or 2nd. group. How well you take of a boat, and how many hours you use it, plays a big part in how well you come out also.

Keep in mind some of the major contingencies only pay for a 2 year old or newer boat for the full amount. Skeeter I beleieve drops to 500$ if 2017 or older.

I would think a guide is taking depreciation on his boat every year which gives him a nice tax return. Don't know this but would be my guess.
To whom much is given, much is required.

When I was with Tidecraft, they would sell me a new boat at costs. I could sell the older model at any price and use the money to purchase a new one. Each time it was done at costs. Don't know if they still do this way any more, but that was how most manufactures use to do it.

I wondered this also (but never lost sleep over it). I came up with 3 things: 1) The guy is a far better fisherman than me and is sponsored by a manufacturer or dealer and gets the new things at little cost/free (my uncle was like this back in the day, said he was always getting free rods and reels, free new motors, oil, filters, etc.). 2) They have more disposable income and can afford it 3) They have less disposable income and structure their finances to accommodate the newer boats.
My uncle was telling me he knew a guy that would buy 1-2 year old boats, still under warranty and use them until the warranty was about to expire, sell them and buy another used boat still under warranty. I'm sure if I fished alot more and had the income i'd do something like this.

If you think your motor won't last much past 700 hrs. You need to switch brands. Precisely. 700 hours is just getting broken in well on a four stroke Yam. I fished with a captain out of Venice last fall that had twin 250 four-stroke Yams on a boat that each had 3,400 hours on them. He told me all he does is change filters, the water pump impeller & lower unit grease every year. Never had a powerhead go down.
