Yes you can. I typically use 6-10lb flouro when fly fishing for sandies in the creeks. You can just tie it straight to your fly line.

When trout fishing you can use 2-4lb flouro as well.

The one main thing to note is that when you use a tapered leader into tippet it will turn your flies over better on a cast, which is especially important with smaller trout flies that have no real weight. If you are throwing streamers or clousers for bass or sandbass etc, those flies typically have a bit of weight to them so they turnover easier with just a straight piece of flouro tied to your fly line.

The whole leader, tippet thing is so variable depending on what you want to do. What do you want a tippet to do? Not alert a fish that its something bad and to be avoided and not to break with the intended fish in mind. But you can use anything as long as it satisfies those two basic things.

bass. striper. sand bass- 20 fluro seaguar fishing line. Just get a 150 yard spool of it. No need for a tapered line.
trout - 5 or 6x fluro tapered trout leader and trout hunter fluro tippet.

Before nylon was invented, people had been fly fishing for hundreds of years. Heres a link with a window into that world of silk and horsehair tippets.

If they got it done with horsehair and silk, think what you might be able to accomplish with any spool of nylon or fluorocarbon.

I like fluorocarbon leader material like seaguar blue or even some of the off brands. I like to build my own leaders, but all of them have a leader butt thats just a little smaller diameter than the fly line at the tip. So a five weight might have a 25/30 pound, 5-6 leader butt necked down through a couple of mid sections to whatever tippet size I want.

I got into fluorocarbon leader material knotted to Modern Gel spun braid before I fly fished and developed a lot of confidence in that so I just kept on using the same leader material after I started fly fishing. But most of mine isnt fly tippet, just regular fluorocarbon leader material not labeled fly tippet.

Theres tons of forum threads on tippet and tippet materials, but we arent all fishing in the same places for the same fish using the same flies.

Ive busted tippets on fish, but thats something I can usually trace back to some fault of my own, poor line management or a rushed knot. Or maybe a fish got into something or had the teeth sharp enough that cut the tippet enough to break it.

The other potential problem with tippets is a little harder to tease out. Is the tippet somehow alerting the fish in some way to prevent a take? When you strongly suspect or know fish are present and feeding, but somehow you arent getting any eats, then it could be a number of things including a problem with the tippet choice. I get an idea on how I think I should make my presentation based on the particular fish, fish sign, structure and possible current where that factor comes into play. Then you have to understand if you have the right leader and tippet to make whatever presentation you are looking for. If I feel like the leader/tippet set up is right, then I might work on a few variations to the presentation and if that doesnt get it done, I might look at changing up the fly pattern tied on to another type.

I monkey around with tippets and leader lengths quite a bit and do feel like I have evidence that the length, diameter and other characteristics of the leader/tippet set up sometimes is the difference in making the presentation that gets the eat or fails to get the eat. I feel like theres very good evidence from my own experiences that running with relatively longer leaders coupled to floating fly line can make better presentations to certain fish feeding on certain structures at certain depths.

Basically, nothing in fishing is one size fits all.

You can but tippet is more effective because its smaller in diameter.

I second Troy. You won't know a difference if you are using a clouser fly or something heavy. You also save a lot of money making your own leaders. I have about 4 tiny bags with single 9 ft fluro 20lb leaders with a perfection loop( knot) on them when I go striper and bass fishing.

I use tippets also but I keep a spool of 2-lb flouro in the tackle box incase I want to change . Go bigger if fishing for larger fish tho .

You can definitely use that as tippet. I use leftover fluoro all the time. Obviously you want the line to be appropriate for what you are throwing in terms line weight. Dont use 30 lb mono to throw dry flies on your 3 wt, but it doesn't have to be rocket science. A decent rule of thumb is to keep the line diameters similar between the tippet and what you are tying it to . It ties better knots that way and it won't do anything goofy as you cast it.
