https://midcurrent.com/history/fishing-with-guts/Before nylon was invented, people had been fly fishing for hundreds of years. Heres a link with a window into that world of silk and horsehair tippets.
If they got it done with horsehair and silk, think what you might be able to accomplish with any spool of nylon or fluorocarbon.
I like fluorocarbon leader material like seaguar blue or even some of the off brands. I like to build my own leaders, but all of them have a leader butt thats just a little smaller diameter than the fly line at the tip. So a five weight might have a 25/30 pound, 5-6 leader butt necked down through a couple of mid sections to whatever tippet size I want.
I got into fluorocarbon leader material knotted to Modern Gel spun braid before I fly fished and developed a lot of confidence in that so I just kept on using the same leader material after I started fly fishing. But most of mine isnt fly tippet, just regular fluorocarbon leader material not labeled fly tippet.
Theres tons of forum threads on tippet and tippet materials, but we arent all fishing in the same places for the same fish using the same flies.
Ive busted tippets on fish, but thats something I can usually trace back to some fault of my own, poor line management or a rushed knot. Or maybe a fish got into something or had the teeth sharp enough that cut the tippet enough to break it.
The other potential problem with tippets is a little harder to tease out. Is the tippet somehow alerting the fish in some way to prevent a take? When you strongly suspect or know fish are present and feeding, but somehow you arent getting any eats, then it could be a number of things including a problem with the tippet choice. I get an idea on how I think I should make my presentation based on the particular fish, fish sign, structure and possible current where that factor comes into play. Then you have to understand if you have the right leader and tippet to make whatever presentation you are looking for. If I feel like the leader/tippet set up is right, then I might work on a few variations to the presentation and if that doesnt get it done, I might look at changing up the fly pattern tied on to another type.
I monkey around with tippets and leader lengths quite a bit and do feel like I have evidence that the length, diameter and other characteristics of the leader/tippet set up sometimes is the difference in making the presentation that gets the eat or fails to get the eat. I feel like theres very good evidence from my own experiences that running with relatively longer leaders coupled to floating fly line can make better presentations to certain fish feeding on certain structures at certain depths.
Basically, nothing in fishing is one size fits all.
