Has anyone fished the Blanco in Wimberley lately? My wife and I are headed that way next weekend and the place we are staying has river access. I'm hopping to catch my first Rio this weekend. I plan on taking my 4wt fly rod and maybe a spinning rod. Any tips or recent fishing reports?

I have not fished the Blanco near Wimberley since the major flood several years ago. The Rios will not start getting active until April. Also the sunfish bite will be picking up as well. There is a cold front coming in later this week that may slow down the bite. Love fishing the Wimberley area during late spring through late fall. thumb

Side Note: You might want to try fishing the Blanco State Park in Blanco TX. About 40 minutes from Wimberley. That part of the river has been heavily stocked with Rainbow Trout all winter long. Anglers are still catching them. Also the sunfish bite there is picking up. If you are fly fishing I would try right below the second spill way at the end of the park. Good luck. Hope you find some fish. coolio

I may give the state park a try. If not this time I may tie it in with a trip to Real Ale. Every time I have been out there I have wanted to stop and fish the section at 1623 and River Run but never have.

I also love fishing Cypress Creek in Wimberley. All of the property is private but if you can get a land owners permission you will have some great fishing. I have seen rental cabins with creek access in the Winberley area. thumb

Banker, how is access for wade anglers at the state park? I was debating going there after a day on the Pedernales in April. I've found fly fishing the Blanco closer to San Marcos and Wimberly to be tough for a wade angler since it runs quite deep close to the banks for such a relatively small river. Wasn't sure if the state park shared those same characteristics. My plan is to hit Pedernales falls state park early in the morning, pack up around 1, head to Real Ale for a beer and a sandwich, and then close out the day in Blanco...

I have seen anglers wade fishing a lot over the years at the State Park. I see them below the second dam on the east end of the park.

Thanks Banker this totally fits with my rudimentary google maps research! I'm penciling it in for sure now!

Everything Chuck BAF has said. Also I have seen fly fishing at the far west end of the park by the highway bridge. The water is clear and shallow in that part. I have caught some nice sunfish there using lures.

We caught quite a few Rios and Redbreasts at River Run near Wimberly last summer. Only trout from Blanco SP this year.
