Anyone ever get a new boat from a dealer with a certificate won at a tournament? I have the opportunity to get a certificate for a Nitro 591 with all standard equipment for considerably less than what it would cost to just outright buy one from a dealer.

Anyone familiar with this process? Are there any hidden fees or has anyone had a bad experience doing this?

Thanks,

I have not had any but what I would do is price the exact same boat at a couple of other dealerships and see how good a deal it is, if it checks out and it is what you want, go for it, good luck.

You know what they say, "if it's too good to be true, it's..."

One of the guys I fish with bought a Skeeter that way and never had any problems. He bought the certificate from the guy and went to dealership and ordered it in the colors he wanted. You can upgrade stuff but that will cost you extra. You will probably have to pay for dealer prep etc.....

The person who won the boat is required to pay sales tax on it. If you get the boat from a dealer that purchased the boat from the winner, who did not pay the tax, you may have to pay the original sales tax, and your sales tax, to get the registration completed. I suggest you look at all the paperwork that is with the boat, make copies if they will let you, and call/fax it all to TP&W before buying it. Be very careful. Trust me, I know about this one.

Be sure and check whether you can make upgrades, with the dealer that you are talking to. I've heard that some dealers, will do the deal ONLY as stated on the certificate. Others, are more than willing to do upgrades.

Several people I know have bought certificates, and if used at a good dealer, they have had no problems.

You might want to email Mike Kernan and he can probably tell you everything you need to know since it is a Nitro.

Go to the place where you need to register it and find out exactly what papers you will have to present to get it registered. I was held up for a couple of weeks because the dealer would not give me the manufacturer's statement of origin paper. Skeeter interceeded for me and I came out of it with a great boat for way less.
