So 2 airlines got fined for sitting in the tarmac to long. One was a cool million and the other was 3/4 of a million. I’d like to know who gets the money? People Stuck in the plane or who? Doesn’t seem like government was affected by it why would they get it.

My guess is the government gets the money, the people pay the fines through higher fares.

The fine isn’t there for the people sitting on the plane. It is there for the extra resources that FAA has to commit since extra planes are on the runway. This is just a complete guess btw.

An article I saw said the airline gets rebated on the fine for the amount they compensated the passengers.
So for example if they get a fine of $1M but they compensated passengers $100K, they pay the government a fine of $900K.

The article I read said the two airlines violated the rules which require them to return to the gate if they don't take off within a certain time limit. It also said the 1.75 million in fines total to the two airlines would allow for 450,000 each for them to compensate the passengers for their inconvenience. So they only pay the FAA .85 million. There was a total between the two airlines of 25 violations. Three were international.
The waiting time limits are 3 hours for a domestic flight and 4 hours for an international flight.
