 Pagosa Springs in March

Anybody fished Pagosa Springs area in March? We are heading up there Spring Break for my wife's 40th birthday. I have a cabin rented outside of Pagosa Springs. It has a mile of private access to the San Juan. Fishing won't be the primary reason for going but taking the fly rods to give it a shot. I plan to stop by the fly shop when we get there for advice. I thought I might poll everyone on the board and see if anyone had any experience in this area this time of year. I know they got alot of snow this year and hopefully won't have to worry about snow melt/runoff when we are there. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I've fished the area, but always after run-off (June/July). But I'll offer some advise that you may have confirmed by a shop like Duranglers, and this comes from fishing the Juan below Navajo damn in NM. I fish midges....sz 22-26. I tie a variety. I use a drop shot/yarn indicator rig with two barbless midges. The reasoning for midges is that they are active all year, so no hatches to time. If you have a mile of the San Juan, I'd just cover that.

Mid April would be a better choice as the bows exit there winter haunts and head to the riffles to spawn. Site fish to aggressive and hungry bows. Cheers

We are buried in snow this year ...not good for your March trip but fishing is going to be awesome this summer and fall. There is a stretch of the San Juan downtown from the bridge past the resort where the hot springs keeps the river ice free for about a half mile otherwise the San Juan is completely covered up. Fish are deep and sluggish but they can be had. That is really your only option unless you want to ice fish on one of the lakes or make the drive to the quality waters. If you are coming to ski you are going to be happy!

I haven't been to wintertime CO since I was a kid, but I remember turning over rocks to gather hellgrammites, and using them as bait to catch whitefish. I don't know if this is an option,
but I thought I'd mention it.

IN March the only options will be Skiing, ice fishing, the San Juan Tailwater below Navajo, and MAYBE a stretch thru town. Love the snowpack for summer fishing, but it doesn't help right now.
