In Denton Sorry, couldn't help myself. It's the main feeder for Grapevine lake, up around Trophy Club (Roanoke).

Went two weeks ago, and only a few, they should be on the move soon, but I think we have another week or so. But, head on out there and let us know. I would start closer to the lake, for now.

I use to live in Roanoke about a mile south of the creek. Most years the run was in full swing around the end of Feb first week of March. Just depends on weather and water flow. Probably wont happen that early with big front Friday night. Before the front might be good. Small Rapalas on an ultralight spin rod with 6-8 lb is what I used. Before I got married I had a roommate for a while. One day he came home from the creek all out of breath and said hurry get your cast net. I said why? He said there were a couple orientals down there just pulling them in. I said yeah, you know that is illegal?

On google maps look for Knob Hills Bike Trail up 377 past Roanoke. Park there, walk south.
What is the creek like after that train derailed a few years ago?

Water is still too cold. May be a couple of fish but no numbers. With next weeks cold the run will probably get going in mid March this year.

If the weather cooperates, I plan to head to Denton Creek this weekend. I assume this cold front is going to keep them deep for another week or two, but I'm itching to get the Hobie out!
Have any of you fished it in the past week or so? I'm curious to know if they started to move up the creek before this most recent front came through.
Thanks in advance.

Im not familiar with Denton creek but want to try creeks on lakes near me. Our creeks I believe are fairly small and shallow. When you fish a creek for whites, do you fish as far up as possible, near the mouth, or somewhere different?
Keep doin what youre doin, youll keep gettin what youre gettin.

You cant fish just any creek for white, you will need to fish a primary feeder creek to a reservoir. They will move up the creek for the spawn. You will catch them anywhere from the mouth all the way up to an obstruction (spillway, shallow rapids, brush, etc).... it really depends upon where they are in the spawning cycle.

Fished Denton Creek off of 377 two weeks ago after work and didn't have any luck. Heading out today to the same place to see if they have made it that far up the creek. Friday and Saturday are also a possibility, weather permitting. Will come back and post results.

Where is a good place to launch a kayak for Denton Creek? I know there is a bicycle area off 377 and was hoping that's a possibility?
Thank you Lord for the gifts in my life

I think it would be a little difficult to launch from the bicycle area off 377, the trail is primitive and pretty steep starting out. Trophy Club Park or the Marshall Creek Boat ramp would be my suggestion.

Primary is a very loose word in this context. It doesnt take much to hold sandies in the spring, any creek with water year round and current year round that flows in to a lake will hold sandies. A lot of my top creeks every year are only about 5-6 wide at some points and maybe 3-4 deep at max.

Well, I put in at Trophy Club and fished all afternoon. It was surprisingly busy for a weekday (main parking lot was full and several in the overflow parking). Several kayaks, jon boats and bankers and a few bass boats running wide open I was skunked and so was everyone else... all afternoon I didn't see or hear of one fish! The water temperature was mostly 49 to 51. I found one section at 54 and saw what appeared to be a scattered suspended fish and a small bait ball. I fished that area fast, slow, deep, shallow, drifted, road runner, jig and small crank bait. Nothing! It was still a great trip... The weather was perfect and it was good to get back on the water. Another week or so of warm weather and it should be on

No luck today, but due to our mad fishing skills, managed to boat 4 sandies. Two males, 2 females, looked like they were all ready to pop. One thing they had in common, empty stomachs. They were definitely there, but definitely not biting. The water is remarkably clear. the creek needs about 5 more feet of depth if I'm gonna get from trophy club to henrietta. Had to pull up short by, I dunno, couple miles at least.
Hopefully a couple days of rain will help. I'll probly be out there one day next week, if ya see an ancient blue boat with an old guy in it, stop & say hello.

My son and I were on the lake late afternoon to sunset. We kept 18 including a bonus fat crappie. The best catching seemed to be on minnows. However, I kept up with an all-white curly-tail 1/8oz. roadrunner. We used the deadstick technique. The fish were suspended 20-30' in 35 fow. We were a fair distance off of the mouth of twin coves, in the main lake. They were still biting after dark. Getting the depth right was critical for getting bites. Having a ten-foot range helped a lot.

At knobs Hill bike trail, but it's a pretty good walk to the creek, you could launch at the bridge. It's a little less than 1/4 mile from the parking area at Knobs Hill.

I went yesterday. I caught a few sandies around 6:00pm on a rooster tail under the 377 bridge. They were leaking milt, which is a little gross, but a good sign that the spawn is heating up. Some other folks who had been in the area longer than I had full stringers!

Worked up every step/hole above henrietta hole (about 1 mile) and nothing... One step above the hole caught two small males, top of Henrietta caught one nice female and a dozen dinks.. As I went down caught more nice fish.. In a week it's going to be good. Small 1/16 oz with white jig doubled up. Not one double today.. Saw two large boats close, but the steps are shallow.. Unless your using a jet dont try.

Made it out this afternoon after work. First spot I didnt get a bite and moved after 10 minutes. Went about 300 yards down stream and it was on. I caught one almost every cast. Stayed for an hour and left with 15 keepers, about the same in dinks. Left them biting.
No magnums but decent fish.

Put canoe in at I35 and nothing until about 200 yards above Henrietta hole. Had a great day with my son. Caught about 40, white plastic jigs, bumping the bottom worked best. Many people on the creek after 3pm.. finished at trophy club park..

Put in at same place, worked up about 1 mile above henrietta hole. Had pleasure to fish with Alec who schooled me 10/1 with a single 1/8oz jig with a white worm. He limited out by 1pm. Dropped him off and fish down to where i enter denton creek. Caught my limit below the hole, with all chunky males.. Threw some nice fish back, if they were oozing white they were on the stringer.. Good day with at least 50 caught.. still early.. below the hole is better IMO

I am new to Denton Creek. If I put in at Trophy Club Park, where is Henrietta Hole? I have been up the creek as far as passing the 377 bridge up to where the creek gets real skinny to the right with the rushing water on a bend.

DonnyParker, that place you spoke of, "where the creek gets real skinny to the right with the rushing water on a bend", about a mile above that is another challenging shallow bend. With a great deal of effort, we got my boat past the first one, but not the next. There may be other barriers beyond that one. Henrietta is about a mile & 3/4 from upstream from where you stopped.
Some years there's enough water to get past those spots, but more often not. It doesn't usually matter though. When they're biting, you can catch fish all up & down the creek. Try to put your lure in the deepest part of the channel where ever you are.

The last time that I was out there was about a month ago, lots has changed now. Back in Feb, I was finding them right before that skinny bend in the deep water. I get the boat back today and plan to be out there tomorrow. There are a couple of the small creeks off of Denton Creek that I am curious about. At any rate, I will be out on the water tomorrow. If I don't find them one place, I will keep moving.

Arrived Trophy Club Saturday morning at 7 to find the gate locked. Waited with a couple other boaters until 8, when we learned the ramp was closed until 10:00 today (Sunday). We all drove to Meadowmere and launched. The ride up to the creek in the face of the north wind was rough and cold, but we caught plenty of fish, found 'em all along the creek, just drifting. Left 'em biting at about 2pm.
Met guide Phill Hurlbut, who diverted his clients from Lewisville to Trophy Club due to wind conditions, and went the extra mile(s), literally, to ferry 'em from Meadowmere into the creek to deliver limits. Nice work, Phill. (I'm the guy in the kingfisher).

First time ever fishing this area. I must be doing it wrong. Put in at trophy club and went up past the bridge a ways. Not one fish. Help a brother out.
Went up the Nolan in the Brazos last weekend and did decent. Thought I would try Denton creek but I struck out.

Ended up with 23 keepers today. Randy they are way back there. Maybe 4 or 5 miles past 377. I took my 16 foot tracker. Was about a half mile from Henrietta hole when I couldn't go any farther but it didn't matter. They were stacked in different pockets below there. Probably threw back 15 that were too small. Hope this helps.

12 solids between 377 and the hole yesterday, today graphed something on the way to 377 and caught some massive females. Down about 1 mile from 377 in a pool, stacked like bricks. Caught on white jig. Sorry to say didn't keep any.. one male caught in that spot. . Didn't make any sense, hole showed hard bottom but the banks were mud.. Easy to overlook.. Prob caught my PB for a sandy today.. Going back tomorrow but not taking big boat so will go up between 377 and the hole for some males. Fishing slowed down below the hole since 6 days ago. But still good.

@2-stroke - I remember seeing you head up the river, I was the bank fisherman braving the cold down from 377, fish weren't biting at my location. When I showed up the carp were heavy along the banks, guess that should have been a sign to head to the cafe for some hot breakfast. Also saw Phil heading up the creek with a father and son braving the cold. P.S. thank you for slowing down when running up the river and being courteous those on the bank.

Tuesday: Canoe: Water above the hole is crystal clear. Caught one above the hole and worked up about a mile with nothing.. water flow low and clear, too clear for me. Came back down until the clarity dropped and started catching fish. Tiny trap worked well reeling very slow (bumping the bottom). Yesterday (kayak) did same and was good about 1/4 mile down until the first boat came thru. Two boats went up and it turned off. Worked down picking up stragglers here and there slightly above currrent and below current.. The long stretches of slow water were slow except for one. Strange sight seen, dark brown water flowing from this creek into the main body.. fishing was no good in this mix.. Creek: https://goo.gl/maps/BXHKH464XT42 dont know where the water was coming from but it was flowing pretty strong and stunk bad. (Followed map to water treatment plant, brown water) You could see a big change in the water.. Would stay between 377 and the hole. If you see a gar roll keep moving, the fish will shut down in that spot. May have caught a few females up, total 33 from 9am-2pm, threw all back. Prosise

I got all the way up to the last shallow spot before the hole in my 16'3" tracker before I couldn't go any farther on Sunday. I don't think you could make it that far but it doesn't matter, they are stacked between 377 and the hole anyways. Not when that far. Just find little pockets along the way and you will catch fish.

I have fished it twice in the last 2 weeks. Me and a buddy had 42 last week and had 30 yesterday. Having to really finesse them up due to the clear water and fishing pressure. My buddy did catch a female yesterday but the rest were males. Seems there is a certain thing that holds them from what I can tell.

Me and my son took the canoe out yesterday. Went up about 1/2 mile below the hole and noticed the rain from Saturday had elevated the water flow a skosh. The color of the water was not bad either. Wasn't getting hits on the usual worm & tiny ratl-trap. Saw several fish chasing the bait but not biting.. Changed to a Correction: 1/32 oz jig head, and scaled down the size of the worm to about as small as I could. Had to bite the front of the jig off to get it to fit on the hook. Fished it as slow as I could and barely work the jig on the bottom. Worked well, we had 39 nice fish, and released "many" right at the 10" and below size. All males, no females. Saw many with a few on the stringer but fish are getting used to all the norm. No females seen at any water I fished. Forgot to add: Gar are out in full force. I was able to catch fish but this is might be why I had to finesse them. Also, three spots i was fishing and catching fish at shutdown completely when a boat came thru. took about 20 mins for the fish to come around. I was using a electric trolling motor and had no probs. Please, If you are coming up in a boat drop the trolling motor if you see someone fishing. If you are wondering why its so slow give the spot some time to recover from your motor. Saw a boat possibly damage his engine trying to go up a shallow step. Sucked something into the lower unit.. Be safe, and starting to see the Damn SkEETos Prosise

Prosise This happens on the main lake too. .Especially when they are spawning. Yesterday, on Lewisville, the graph would be reading normal with no "fish" but there were areas where the bottom was a solid, bold line. These were fish. Very easy to overlook. But they are there.

Had good day.. Went up to the hole, fishing slowed down since sunday. Caught @10 with a guy I met, think his name is David. Left him with my fish and came down. Fished my way down and still had trouble getting bites with my normal white jig and tiny trap. Pulled out the tiny jig and started catching fish, very slow and not fast paced at all. Picked up 4 crappie, 15 whites, and two cats.. Thought i hooked a gar on the big cat, 4lb test was fun. Found rhe crappie in the shaded areas at 1230pm here. https://goo.gl/maps/kcE79Dv1HVQ2 worked down and ran into big females, and a bunch of them. They are moving.. Thought it was a fluke, but after 12 of them I was convinced. FEMALES RELEASED.... They were here: https://goo.gl/maps/gPEds13T7qP2 Will be seeing them up soon. Gar are out, but the finess worm worked again.. Did see a guide boat pretty close to the second step below the hole, but they left and didn't see them again Btw, all fish except two sandies were caught on the 1/32oz jig/worm just barely working it off the bottom. I don't use live bait which would be a killer.. Did see two men using a sein for bait, bait is about 1 inch long which I think explains the results of the small artificial. Talked to a friend who did well down by the 377 bridge. He was Using minnows and limited in 2 hrs.. boat cannot get in here, but walkers can. Big fish seen in his pix. Here https://goo.gl/maps/G9yG27d31J92

Fished it today for a while and had 20 sandies a crappie and a catfish. Bite was pretty slow... we need a flood. Just curious prosise, did you keep all males? Ran into the guide as well and proceeded to catch 5 sandies where he was fishing when I pulled up lol. Caught them all on a glow fin a Shad on a 1/16 oz head.

Yes i kept all all the males over 10ish, until i had 25 for the day.. Gave 10 away earlier that day.. I think when i was checking all the fish later there was a small female.. But the large ones were released. The crappie location I mentioned in the earlier post is prob my favorite area. The top half of that section holds fish, the lower section is gar central.. the small pool below this section has a real good deep spot, right below the log.. Hold on with the FLOOD word.. I have been talking about that with my buddies, a flood would wash it all away.. Don't want any of that.. The rain last saturday gave it a little help.. Will be out on sunday with my son, if you see us give me a shout..

Why do you only keep males? A flood would bring more fish up. Thats why the bite has continually slowed. If it comes a heavy rain on Saturday you will see what I am saying. It definitely wont wash it all away lol

Ill take a really, really solid rain but no flood. Surprisingly quite a bit of the unseen brush and laydowns that I marked while walking it few years back when it was really down are still in the same spots. Id like it to stay that way. It helps in fall/winter

I have been throwing back the Females to help the spawn. Once they show signs of post spawn and they did their job "It's on like Donkey Kong". There is no shortage of males up waiting for the ladies to show up. So from what I remember its about 2-3 weeks from the time the males show up the females come up.. The few larger fish I have caught had solid bellies which could mean a half a million eggs.. I think it's worth it to let them drop the eggs first.. If they are showing signs of the rue drop, its meat on the table.

Gotcha. If you really want to help the spawn then it would be best to not keep any fish. It takes two to get the job done. Think of it this way, when you leave the creek with limits of males then there are 25 less males to fertilize the eggs each time when the females do show up.. There are just as many females as there are males and every male taken is one less that will fertilize the eggs. It only seems like there are more males than females because you are fishing the spawning grounds. When the females show up there is an even number of both . Never quite understood the idea of wanting to help the spawn by releasing one sex and leaving with a limit of the other when it takes both to make more.

Funny stuff.. The females hold the key, the males have probably already fertilized the upper end of the creek.. Prob will continue for a while.. So hard having to go to work with days like today.. Hope the rain isn't too much.. Will see on sunday...
Be safe

Prosise Angling pressure isnt gonna have an effect on the spawn. Less than10% of the fisherman are capable of taking a limit every trip, on a grand scale that is nothing. Sandbass spawn like rabbits, the only thing that will have an effect is heavy gill netting or castnetting.

should be easy limits next weekend. Much more fish will be up. Just needs 4-5 days for the water to calm and clear up. Should also be a decent amount of crappie.

We took the kayak/canoe and launched at Trophy club park near the main lake circle. Lake came up almost 1 foot, upper end of the lake is muddy, looks like the upper 25% of the lake is muddy. I could see the color change down the lake. Only thing I saw was some large gar, ran into a few large ones with the canoe. Will be a litrle while before yhings settle down. Still have a pretty strong current down the creek.

Seeing some good reports of fishing on the creek out of boats going up... Some nice fish caught this week starting on Tuesday with stained water, should be getting good..

Was headed up this AM, drove over the 377 bridge and saw chocolate milk. Went to TC park instead and went looking around, ended up the creek that dead ends into 1171 Here: https://goo.gl/maps/YaWZj1hktPjeUtPN6Water was brownish and clear, doodle socked a jig but no bites. Much bait seen so will try again. Going to the hole by foot to check it out tomorrow. Prosise
