Has anyone read this book by Bill Murphy? I’m about half way through it and it’s opened my eyes a lot.

I read it years ago. It was ok. I’m not a trophy bass hunter so lots of it doesn’t apply to me.

I read it and feel as if I learned enough to make it worthwhile. It also confirmed my own thoughts about where bigger fish locate. The parts about fish orienting to structure and cover were the most interesting to me. The chapters on bait selection and actually fishing were not that interesting to me as Bill was not out to get more than a bite or two a day (or week). I doubt I will ever stitch a live crawfish, but I believe, as he did, that fish over about 4 lbs have different requirements and depth preferences than bank runners.

Great read! If you fished like he did, you would save yourself a heck-of-a lot a money!!

I have the book somewhere. I used to see Lunker Bill a lot back in the day. I've never seen anyone else fish that slow. Stitching big worms and crawfish. His patience was unmatched.

Every fisherman should read it. They don’t have tonagree with it or follow it, but it’s a great resource.

I remember watching him fishing in his old aluminum boat out in San V stitching live crawdads or the monster 12” worms out in like 40’ of water.... two anchors set out and staying in one spot for hours. When I moved out to Santee back in 1982, I heard the stories of the guy with the red beard and salt water spinning reels.

Great book. You just have to recognize California, Florida, and Texas lakes are all very different beasts. Many of his lessons still apply, but they have to be recalibrated to Texas water.

Got it back in the '90's. Really great info and approach, apply as needed.

We went around him sitting anchored on a point at El Capitan one day. He was near the bank and throwing out deep. We fished the entire cove one direction and caught a couple small fish. Started back the other way when my partner says "Murphy's hooked up" We watched him land a fish we estimated to be 7-8 pounds. He played a very different game then we did.

Read the book when I lived in Texas and I thought it was good and I tried to apply some things to Texas waters but then I moved out to San Diego and it was kind of cool seeing all of these things in the book so much more clearly when I started fishing the local waters.

I fish the salt about 98% of the time these days though...

I also read it years ago. Some good stuff in there.

Also check out "Doug Hannon's Field Guide for Catching Bass"
He caught a few double digit fish in his day.
A lot of what these guys teach runs a bit contrary to popular practices.

"..The pleasantist angling is to see the fish
Cut with her golden oars the silver stream,
And greedily devour the treacherous bait.
