I've convinced myself I need a field trip tomorrow or Thursday to Lavon. I'm assuming I won't be able to find shad so want to try a stink bait. I'm not really after a specific speices, just some eaters. I'll be bank fishing. Since I need it quick, it will need to be sold at a local retailer preferably Academy or Walmart as those are closer to me. Thanks a lot! Thomas

Go to Academy and pickup some C J's Monster bait. They carry several different flavors, but I'd go with the Monster bait or shad flavor.
Just one more cast!

I rarely use stink bait any more. I have found Stubbys cheese baitbto be my best all around catfish bait. Nothing else comes close.

How do you fish the Stubbys? Is it a punch bait or does it ball up on a treble hook?

I was trying to let Stubby answer this because he is the man. I just make a ball of the bait and form it on a treble hook. Good thing about it is the bait does not stink.catfish eat it also. I have tried just about everything on the market and NOTHING works better.

It's a cheese-bait. Roll it into a ball and squish it on/around your treble hook. It's cheese-based, so it's not going to smell like something died in it. In fact, my dog has chewed off the lid and eaten about half a jar, twice. It didn't affect him, as far as I can tell. Kind of expensive dog food, if you ask me. I eventually learned to keep it well out of his reach... I've been really happy with it. It's easy to use and reliably catches the cats (and dogs too, based on my experience .

I'll get some Stubby's soon. Thanks for the info. I did use the CJs for an hour other day. I wasn't in my ideal spot so I'm not going to say 0 fish b/c of bait. One thing I didn't like though is after about 30 minutes I'd reel in to move it to a different spot, and most of it would be off the hook. I was using a spring treble hook which supposedly holds that junk on there a little better?

All these baits are going to be similar. They melt or dissolve or simply loose their scent over time. So, regular (frequent?) re-baiting is a hurdle you have to deal withthe only way to have a strong scent trail for the cats to follow. I like the cheese bait because when its done, its also off of the hook. With punch baits, I make the decision to clean off the hook and recharge the bait.

Stubby, my issue is I can only bank fish, and I need to get the bait out there into the deeper water. I generally cast as far as I can in my ideal spot. I also fish into the wind so a weight is a must unless somehow that bait is heavy enough to get out that far.

Try putting Stubby's in one of those Little Stinker plastic bait lures, you can rear back and throw without losing bait.

I've heard of folks using Atlas Spawn Net to make soft baits, like Stubby's, castable. Also, makes it easier to use hooks other than a treble. You'll want to get their "magic thread" too--the elastic secures the thread without having to make a knot. It's real common with the folks who use spawn sacks for salmon (I suppose trout too). IMO that's a lot of steps, though you can build up a stock of netted baits long before you head out. I've recently been banking and Stubby's seems to hang together well enough for me to get a couple good 20-yard casts with a good soaking in between. As the weather warms up, you might add some flower to thicken it so it can withstand long casts.

Thank you. As it warms up I'm hoping I can start to catch shad again and I won't really need the stubbys. I just got the itch bad to get at them now, and I got 0 shad in a few casts with the net. Yes I know I can buy baits, but I'm a hard headed cheaparse who likes to do it on my own lol. I don't want to spend a lot of money on rigs for stink/cheese baits b/c I don't like fishing with it. Shad is my goto when I can catch them. I'll know next time to just freeze a bucket full for times like this.
