Any difference in the way it cooks?

Never really used Royal Oak but got some donated for a gig on Friday.

Thanks.

The few times I have used it,it takes forever for the lighter fluid smell to go away and does not last as long as regular charcoal

Whoever donated it "donated" it for a reason.

Use Kingsford in a chimney lighter. No lighter fluid needed, no lighter fluid aftertaste.

Matchlight burns fast and leaves a petro odor.

Are we talking Kingsford Briquettes vs Royal Oak Briquettes or Kingsford Briquettes vs Royal Oak Lump coal? I’ve only cooked with RO Lump but I’d imagine RO Briquettes are better than Kingsford. Maybe TMan will offer some input.

I've only used Royal Oak Lump and Kingsford blue bag briquettes
Royal Oak Lump will burn hotter, faster than Kingsford blue.

If I were cooking a steak--I'd use Royal Oak lump
Smoking a brisket--KIngsford blue

Are we talking Royal Oak lump or briquettes? I've never used the RO briquettes but the lump is good stuff for the money. There are better lumps out there but they cost a good bit more too. Just don't douse the lump in lighter fluid. Use a chimney and some newspaper or paper towels.
