Before I try to overthink this, what bait would be recommended for catfish in a pond.

Thanks

If it is a smaller pond and you're just looking to catch fish I would try cheese/punch bait, shrimp, squid. If it is a larger pond and you are looking for some bigger fish, I would use cut bait. Throw a cast net and see if you can get some perch. The head is usually the best bait. If you can't locate any perch, go to your local Asian market and pick up a carp or buffalo for cut bait. One of my largest catfish was caught on a bluegill head from a decent sized pond in Frisco.

You are awesome.

There are there ponds within a 1/8 of each other. Catching perch is not a problem. I also have two traps I can set out.

I have tried cut bait, the catfish in my pond just dont care for it. LOL

I may have to invest in some bait.

You may only have finicky channel cats in your pond then. I would try any kind of stink bait, shrimp or worms and you should do fine.

I am listening.

I have enough rods and reels I can try anything and everything... LOL
However, finding the squid to buy might be a problem...

Punch bait / Stink bait
Night crawlers
Shrimp
Liver

If my memory serves me correctly, when I was stationed in New Orleans I put a shrimp on a hook and followed that up with a worm. The water was brackish.

I think Stubbys cheese bait is good everywhere. I caught 39 Monday and Tuesday at the lake with the water temp being 49. Catfish SLOW down in cold water somthe bites are very subtle. I dont have ponds to fish but I do fish Lavon, Twok and Fork and almost always come home with a good fish dinner.

I get squid readily available and fresh from the Asian market in Plano. Along with carp and buffalo.

When I fish carps in the creek, using sweet canned corn, I sometimes catch midsize cats.

I appreciate the replies.

Right now I am already planning a mid March fishing outing with my boys. I think I am going to set up 6-8 rods with different bait and see what happens.

I don't know how old your boys are, but I have 8 year old twin boys that love to fish. If your profile is correct, you're in Bells. Many good places around you to try. You should also consider taking them to the Denison dam. Good place to catch some nice blue cats and a great place for kids to explore. My boys fossil hunt and always come back with buckets of fossils.

LOL and Yes.

When I can acquire a small boat, we will start fishing Bonham State Park, (not lake.) it has excellent fishing, just not as good from the bank.

My boys ages are 8, 11, and 14.

Currently, we have 6 ponds we can fish within 5 min of the house.

Get those boys seining crawdeads and creek minnows... Both work great

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach
