The PVC provides some flex. They bend to the shape of the Kayak while providing support. 2x4's would not bend and would place all of the weight on a smaller area... this could cause deformation over time.

For the record, Hobie does not recommend PVC, but I feel that is an attempt to sell their $250 cradles! A lot of people use 4" PVC and I have yet to read a negative report.

I built this rack from some square tube I had laying around. I put casters on the bottom. It works. I roll it around wherever I need it to be. Has space for other stuff, too.
