Would appreciate comments on how you are trailering motor: Using old fashioned "motor toter" that allows lower unit to connect to trailer, or: one of the newer bracket units that are from transom to motor like MotorMate? Thanks in advance

I use a motor mate, switched to it about 1.5 years ago and love it.
I will say that you should be prepared to for this thread to tell you that everyone is doing it wrong and everyone elses way of doing it is bad for their boat. This is a quarterly conversation around here.

Thanks Shallow Waters for your comments! LOL. Much like my posting asking for comments regarding purchase of a new Triton. Very little info offered about the ride, quality, etc. Lot's of opinions of whether JM would close the company. Oh well. Fun reading!

motormate all day! sho came with a prorule and i wanted to like the simplicity of it but after towing with it for a year i got tired of looking in my rear view mirror seeing my motor dancing from side to side. the red clips did nothing to alleviate it either. installed the motormate and its rock solid. no steering clips needed either. another negative to the prorule is you have to damn near trim the motor to the moon to install it which allows the plastic rigging tube to rub the hull.

"Old style" transom saver for me...everyone else is wrong. Their boat will soon spontaneously combust, and they probably kick puppies when no one is looking. Seriously, though, supporting the motor weight via the trailer just makes more sense to me, but to each his own...I've never heard of any problems with either style.

I use the Yamaha sticks that came with the boat. Going on 16 years now and no issues. I also use steering ram clips to help with side to side wiggle.

Seriously, though, supporting the motor weight via the trailer just makes more sense to me, but to each his own...I've never heard of any problems with either style. Not starting an argument and to each his own but what supports the motor when off the trailer ? It's strictly the transom. I understand the jolts of driving on rough roads but think of how the motor is tilted using the older type "transoms savers'. How much weight are the "transom savers" actually carrying with the motor tilted at a 30* angle. One thing to consider too, in addition to the weight of the motor think of the torque a 200-250hp. engine puts on the transom while on the water. Personally I have never heard of a transom failure due to the weight of the motor and as you might expect I use a MotorMate but recommend the owner of the boat use his or her preference.

I have the ProRule with the little red steering arm braces. The motor does jostle side to side going over bumps.
The ProRule is fine but I think the Motor-Mate style of savers are better for motor stability.

Technically, the only way to take weight and extra stress off the transom is to have the old style that touches the trailer.

I still don't get that Okie, if the motor is on a 30* angle and the "transom saver" is connected near the prop, how much weight would you say the "transom saver" is carrying ? The heaviest part of the engine is directly above the transom no where near where the "transom saver" is connected.

Has anyone ever run a Motor-Mate on a tin boat?
