I have been fishing in a pair of Redington Palix River Waders since picking up the fly rod 3 years ago. On my last outing they developed a small leak in the crotch. I have two questions...

1) I would love to keep these as a back up, how do i find the leak? I've tried alcohol, the rubbing kind, without success.

2) Simms G3? Is it really worth it? I fish the rivers in the great state of Texas 99.95% of the time and I fish year round. Never really tracked it but probably 50-70 days a year. I walk/wade 100% of the time and put several miles up and down stream per trip.

I had the same issue and desire to keep them as back up. Here is what worked for me. Try to isolate the area that is leaking by actually wading in them to see if the leak is in the crotch or at the knee etc. Once you have the general area, take them into a dark room with a good strong flashlight and start searching with the light from the inside by putting the flashlight right up against the waders.

Can you fill them up with water and look for the leak?

I've used the flashlight trick in a dark closet successfully. If it's on a seam though it will be super hard to keep it fixed. I was recently in a similar situation as you with my Orvis waders. Had them for 3 years, they slowly developed leaks to the point where I was patching with Aquaseal. Got tired of them continuing to leak so I started looking for new waders. Was convinced I was going to either get the G3's or the new Freestones. I ended up finding a pair of the Redington Palix River's that you have for $90 and going with those along with some good Simm's boots. I decided that, while I do wade 100% of the time and I basically fish 100% of the time in Texas, I only really use my waders December, January, and February. I wet wade as much as possible, so I figured my money was better spent on a nice pair of boots that I will be able to use year round. That being said, if you end up with the G3's they could last you 10 years+ if you take care of them.

Tried that...don't recommend it. Hard to handle that much water in a flexible balloon. Can also do more harm than good with the extra stress on the weak spot. Know anyone with a functioning/available pool?

I�ve had my G3�s for 8 years. Had some small leaks in them from falling into some briars. Sent them to Simms. They repaired all leaks and also put new booties in them also. I believe it cost me 50 dollars. I believe I paid 300 for them back in the day. Are they worth the money? Cost me under 40 dollars a year to wear the good stuff excluding the repairs.. Leaks suck! I wish the new G4 pros would come out.

Thanks everyone for your experiences and recommendations. I've decided on the Simms G3's. I did contact Redington who told me that they do not make their waders so they do not repair them. Not sure why they have a wader repair form if this is the case. I contacted Simms who's waders are made in the USA and repaired by them if possible. This coupled with nothing but 5 star reviews has led me to this decision. Thanks again!

You made a good call. The G3s will last you a really long time if you take care of them. I don't think there is such a thing as truly leak proof waders, but the G3s are as close as you can get and Simms's service can't be beat.



UV cure resin works well too and when you zap it with the light it's cured and ready to go.

G3 are great waders, good choice.
