Depending on how wide your trailer is and the top rail design, this might work.

I have a 12' long utility trailer that I use to haul kayaks. I rarely carry more than 2 yaks, so I just bolt it on when needed and it is not in the way when not needed. It only takes a couple of minutes and it is quite sturdy.
