Headed to fish Picachos and El Salto in March. What recommendations do you have for set ups. Type of line, weight, etc.. Will the lakes fish differently? Thanks

I've made that trip twice. I rig one reel with 65# braid, 2 with 20# fluoro and 1 with 15# mono for top water.
8 bags of Zoom magnum lizards, watermelon.
4 bags of Zoom magnum flukes, white
2-3 bags of Zoom magnum flukes, watermelon
Lots of 5/0 WG hooks, tungsten weights, pegs
1 oz Oldham spinner baits
Big yellow magics bone
Good Scale

I would add 6" watermelon/red Senkos to forkduc's list. Also, take some chartreuse dye with you.

Make sure and take an accurate scale......don't use guides! Note: March can be good topwater all day if you have any cloud cover....big fish caught this way

El Salto: A.M: topwater yellow magic (bone color)
Whopper plopper (med size-white or shad color)
Chatter bait or swim jig
Mag fluke/white weightless

after 10:00: #1 bait slow rolling Keitech swing impact "fat" swimbait size 5.8 or 5" in white or shad color. Put on 1/2 to 3/4 oz. weedless head....fish slooooooow
10" worm in plum or blue/black color 1/2 oz. weight
deep diving crank Dredger 20 or 25' Strike King 8XD or 10XD on 30 lb. braid to get deep! Citrus shad or Talapia colors

My last two trips big fish were hard to come by. Lots of smaller fish to 2-4 lbs but over 5 pounds hard to come by. Keith swimbait best for bigger bites!

Pacacho's: Loaded with smaller fish to 3lbs. Challenge is to get past the small ones for bigger bites. Senkos and lizards produce a fish on almost every cast but hard to get bigger fish
Use heavier weights to get past the small ones. Awesome topwater bite with any bait. I use bigger spooks (or whopper ploppers) to try to get past the dinks.
Mid day: deep divers, 10" worms, big jigs

I use 20 lb. mono or 50 lb. braid for topwater. 30 lb. braid for cranks. 20 lb. floor for swimbaits, jigs and worms

I am headed for Comedero on the 25th after BIG bass. Last report fish up to 11 bs. caught on 1 oz. spinnerbaits. Will file report when I return

Fish magnum lizards while you're there and you'll be rewarded with some serious tuggers!!

ADD some Black n Blue Flake Senkos as well for wacky rigging EARLY in the morning and tell you guide on El Salto to take you to the waterfall first thing
You might catch the same 10+ that Sooner Claus caught there.

LEAVE these at home --- you won't need them.

Thanks for the input. Keep it coming, especially on reels and set ups.

I haven't been to Picachos but I didn't see anything at El Salto that you would need braid for. I used 17 lb. Seagar Invizx and a 1/4 oz. unpegged tungsten weight with a 5/0 straight shank hook for 8" tx rigged lizards. I had one very good day on magnum flukes on the same set up except with a 6/0 offset hook.. You might want to take some 3/8 & 1/2 oz weights in case it gets windy. Most of my Senko fish came wacky rigged. Take more hooks, weights, and soft plastics than you think you'll need.

It can be brutally hot. Take advantage of coming back to the lodge for lunch. The best fishing is early and late anyway. If you try to stay out all day you'll be beat by 3:00 and you'll miss the late afternoon bite. Stay hydrated during the day then ask for extra tequila in your margaritas at night. I know you'll have a great time.

Be sure to ask for stout Bloody Marys to wake up to or some good Baileys Irish Cream in your coffee
That will get you going at first light.

Take a medium light spinning rod and some 6lb fluorocarbon. Live dangerously!

Picachos has a LOT or timber, need at least 20# Abrazex.
As far as reels, take your high speed and nothing less than 7.1.1
