My house will be paid off in 5 years when I’m 40. I’ll probably buy a lake house at that point.

Don't have any mortgage payments, but put $700/month aside for property taxes every year...so, might as well have a small mortgage payment. Money not paid into a mortgage goes into retirement account.

Buy more property, no way you put money in savings....lowest possible return

One thing I've learned is that people who pay off their house start paying more attention to their property taxes and the cost of their home owners insurance. It becomes lump sum rather than escrow.

No house payment since the middle of 1998. We don't live in a large, fancy house (it was built in the 60s and has just over 2,000 sq. ft.) but it is comfortable for the two of us. Taxes are low - less than $2K/yr. Makes retirement easy.

Three houses. One paid for, two with mortgages. But the two mortgaged properties pay the tax & insurance on my home.

my house has been paid for since I retired almost 14 years ago...1,700 sq ft plus screened in back porch, fishing room and double carport plenty big enough for wife and I …....taxes run approx. $1,400 and insurance about $1,200.00 per year...

not wealthy but having everything paid for when we retired has enabled us to travel all over U.S. and Canada several times plus I go to argentina dove hunting and mexico fishing each year....
