Taking my bucket list dream trip for a photo safari to South Africa in October this year. Will headquarter in Cape Town for a few days of golf and sight seeing before heading into the bush. Any good fishing in that area that any of you have PERSONALLY done? Can't wait to do this trip!!!!

Good luck!

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!

I hunted South Africa 3 years ago and couldn't believe how many bass boats I saw on the road. I don't have a clue where to tell you to go but there are clearly a lot of fisherman there. Do some research and report back.

Googled bass fishing in S Africa, but it looks like it's more towards Johannesburg than Cape Town. Funny after reading the articles that large mouth in S Africa are considered an "invasive species"! LOL.

If any of you TFF'ers have ever taken a trip to Cape Town PM me. I'd like to know more about the area before I head out there.

You may be out of luck in the Western Cape/Cape Town area of RSA. They had been experiencing a severe drought to the point that Cape Town was a toilet flush away from being out of fresh water. Most of the lakes (the South Africans call them dams) were in mountainous areas around the cape and contained good smallmouth numbers but from what my friends over there tell me the drought took it's toll. You'll have a blast on your safari and enjoy all that South Africa has to offer. It may be gone before you know it. 'spoon

There is a Bass Federation in S. Africa. Tackle stores and tournaments. Even the don't eat bass argument. Read the article in this month's Bassmaster magazine.

If you have the opportunity to travel north into Zimbabwe, I recommend seeing the Victoria Falls.
Years ago, my family went on a photo safari of South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. I river fished the Zambezi River for Tiger Fish--awesome fishing experience. Seeing the Victoria Falls was one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

I have fished for tiger fish in Zimbabwe and did well. Need to be aware of hippos as they are dangerous.

Hey Collin, if you have any details about who you booked your trip with and whether it was a private game reserve, etc I would love to hear some of the details. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the other tips on fishing guys. It's mainly about the safari, but if there is bass fishing ANY time I go somewhere, that's always a research point and on the list! This year is shaping up to be something special. The Mrs bought me a round of golf at Pebble Beach for my birthday in May. Africa in October. Falcon this spring and I'm back to fishing some tournaments again. Old age DOES have a few benefits! LOL!
