I might be wrong, usually am, but I think any athlete with pride wants to be a success and to accept money and be a failure is the last thing on his mind when he signed that first contract. Bradford and Manziel are different animals but I bet both would have rather earned their money. I think Bradford was traded around like a used golf club and that had to be a big disappointment. When people think of him they won't talk about all the money he made, it will be " yeah I remember him, what a bust." Same with Leinart, Vince Young, Manziel, RG3, Sanchez, JaMarcus Russell (huge bust) all 1st rounders.

You are absolutely, 100% correct. The ONLY thing on the athlete's mind is performing at a high level. Well mostly - JFF seemed to think about levering his celebrity in the club, but you are spot on. However they pay agents, business managers, and money men to think of all the other possibilities and help them make good business decisions, which includes the possibility of failure. A friend of mine was an agent for a few athletes back in the late 80s/90s, none that were superstars, but he had a few NFL clients - he always said it was the Athletes job to perform on the field, and HIS job to make sure he maximized the $ regardless of what happened or didn't happen on the field.

Kiper said he thought mid 1st round for Murray.... that would make him a millionaire too....who knows what he'll do. I hope he follows his heart and not $$ Kiper picked Matt Leinart , Vince Young and Jake Locker as can't miss 1st rounder's too. Sometimes you just don't know. Johnny Unitas was a 9th round pick. Bart Starr wasn't drafted until the 17th round. Sometimes you just don't know. Whether or not any of these guys actually pan out is a total carp-shoot - Kiper is good a predicting where they will go. Nobody is good at predicting how they actually do, including the NFL execs and talent scouts. In the 5 years from 2010 to 2014 there were 14 QBs taken in the first round. I picked that timeframe because there's enough data to really evaluate them ... Arguably only 4 of the 14 have played up to 1st round expectations - QBR>85, and good consistent starter. That list is Newton, Luck, Tannehill, Bridgewater - that's only 28.5% accuracy by the pros!3 of the 14 have good QBR numbers but never lived up to 1st round expectations: Bradford qbr 84.5 but is always hurt, RG3 qbr 88.2 but hasn't been a starter, and bortles qbr of 80.6, meh 7 of the 14 - 50% - had career qbr < 80 that list includes Tebow, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Weedon, Manuel, and Manziel So its a gamble no matter how you look at it. You'll be flattered to know Ted I actually agree with you. I think a lot of the success the Cowboys had with draft picks in the past had a lot to do with Gil Brandt and the methods he used. But it is as you said a carp shoot as to how they actually perform over the years. Players like Larry Allen, Rayfield Wright and Jason Witten are examples of players who weren't 1st rounder's but had long all pro careers. The combine doesn't always prove anything either. Murray will no doubt enter the draft, ego if nothing else will determine that. The idea of him going in the 1st round and starting as a rookie makes no sense to me when there are much better options in the draft at QB. Why would you take a 5'-7 QB when there is a 6'-3 Haskins with the same skills. I would take Will Grier ahead of Murray. I'm not involved in the draft in any form and all I have is an opinion which is actually meaningless but is just as good as anyone else's. Good job with your research, who woulda thought Bradford's career would end up like it did. Another Heisman bust. I think you are right in the end Bradford didn't do much in the NFL. I will say this he went to St Louis and got hit on nearly every play and took his knees out, or finished them off he was never the same after that. I think he would have been a really good NFL if he had gone to another team where he wasn't beat up the first 4 years.

Unfortunately the top college QB always goes to the worst team. Bradford was a great college QB but we'll never know how great he would have been in the NFL. Shame too.
