My question is do you guys think if the multiple tourney weekends had not taken place starting 3+ years ago, do you think the bass quality would still be healthy with 20+# sacks routinely? Most definitely. Forage has not changed. Nothing has changed except the bigger fish being hauled around all day and eventually dumped back into the lake after weigh-in. I know the fish that we've carried around were not in the best shape when dumped, and just seemed to be roughed up. That's just too much stress on the fish, IMO. I've witnessed many big floaters over the years. Not a whole cove full, but more than you want to see. I can remember when the lake opened up, the average size fish was right at 4lbs. Those are even non-existent now. The ones that were too small to weigh in the last 4 years are just now getting some size, but it'll be hard pressed to weigh 20lb sacks again due to the tournament pressure continuing. Close the lake again for a couple of years and it'll return to the same ole' Squaw it was back in 2013-2014. Tilapia population is way down. True, but my experience graphing abundance of shad would seem to make up that difference. Also, the size of the average tilapia would kill 90% of the bass if they were to try to eat and digest those 2lbers. I believe the threadfin population far outweighs the diminishing tilapia population, as far as having plenty of food for the fish to grow.

I think the tilapia were higher quality forage. The small bass you catch are always round little footballs, the larger bass more and more have 5 pound heads and 3 pound bodies.

In summary ... ban the netters, add hydrilla, add slot, add redfish, and open it up to night fishing!

Netter population is way up. Anyone think they keep the bass they net?

Good thinking but shad are thick on Squaw as I have seen on any lake. People list Tilapia as a prominent food source but I question for how long. The good thing is they spawn many times throughout the year providing fry and smaller Tilapia for baitfish year round but they also quickly grow to a size that only the alligators on Squaw could choke down. Part of the reason they are popular as a farmed food source is their fast growth rate. Do the biguns compete for the shad? Absolutely. I have been in coves and up close to the river when there was acres of Tilapia feeding on shad but as I said I still see a crazy amount of shad. I believe the baitfish population is more than adaquate. Maybe a few less winter tournaments and some of that old hydrilla accidentally getting reinstated would help with the bass QUALITY....or maybe its just a cycle like all lakes go through. Lots of conjecture but I do believe the bass QUANTITY and baitfish availability is still way above average on Squaw Creek.

My question is why does hydrilla NOT grow in Squaw? Welsh has a tone of grass...Is it because of the high salt content? You would think it would grow of the temp.

I think the bigger ones die when the water temp hits 108 degrees in the summer!

I lied it was tackle depot. Who cares still dead distressed fish floating around. Might need to quit listening to "hearsay". I represent Tackle Depot and I ran the tournament and can assure you I didn't just "load up my boat and go Home". I made sure no floaters where left behind. Any tournament I have run Fish care is Number one and sure as hell will not leave floaters at the dock. I carry my fizzing needles with me and offer them up at weigh in. I cant control what happens hours after we are gone. there was a championship out there as well but I will not drag their name through the mud like you just did to Tackle Depot. Get your facts straight

My question is why does hydrilla NOT grow in Squaw? It did. I do not know where it went. Water temps? It flourishes in the other power plant lakes. Salinity? The Brazos River has a high salt content but hydrilla flourished on Possum Kingdom and Granbury forever. They pump from Granbury to keep Squaw full. Squaw now has as little vegetation as any lake I have seen. I only know it WAS there and its not there now.

We went last June and saw water temps up to 110 degrees. The fish were way up the river to get away from the hot water. I truly believe that the excess of hot water kills the bigger fish.
