Make it looser? Yes, that'll do. It doesn't take much oil though. It'll be a bigger trick to firm it up, if it lasts till spring.
Yes, I'm one of those that has difficulty finding his own cattails...(classic punch bait thickener).

I just use a little lake water to limber mine up. I have used beer, but that was too much emotionally.
