Maybe some other guys with more experience will chime in.
My personal experience with Tawakoni (which is literally in my backyard) is that bank fishing the shallows after October and before March can be slow and frustrating. I had between four and six rods out from last Friday night through tonight (five days straight) and got a total of five blue cats. 2, 5, 11, 12, and 24 pounds. Nothing on Saturday or today, all fish were caught on 12/23, 12/24, 12/25.
The 2-pounder came on a large shiner a couple feet below a wooden float in our sheltered cove. The 24 pounder came from a big shad head in the channel between our cove and the main lake, and the 5, 11, and 12 came off our point. 11 on the north side, 12 on the south side, 5 straight out to the west. All on cut shad. All locations are 5-6 feet deep with the current lake level. But the fish couldn't have been more spread out.
I'm actually surprised I caught anything. I usually don't in the shallows (from the bank) until the water hits 55 or 60 in the spring. The weekend before Christmas was a big goose egg with some frozen cut buffalo and chicken hearts even though I had six rods out. It seems like the blues are foraging around in the shallows here and there, but they are not highly concentrated in my area like they are in the spring or fall.
Other advice I've been given which seems to work is to keep the wind in your face (or, in my case, to use a balloon rig to target the shoreline a couple hundred yards north of our point when the south wind is blowing). I've had something pull over a 1-1/2" angle iron rod holder buried 16 inches in the ground and another episode where 65# braid was broken when drifting big pieces of cut shad towards that shore during a south wind. Targeting the bank where the wind is blowing waves (and probably baitfish) definitely seems to increase the odds and action for me.
Unless I have missed some technique, it's going to be hard to keep little ones entertained fishing from the bank in shallow water this time of year. You may have to move around a good bit to find fish depending on the weather and the day.
I've not fished at Anchor Inn personally, but have been told you can hit deeper water with long casts off the point over there. I've also seen big fish taken late in the year (beginning of November) over at the causeway on 751, guy had probably a 50 pounder (4 or so feet long) in the back of his pickup, but all I caught arriving later on the same day was one freshwater drum, lol. In a north wind you could try the point in the West Tawakoni city park, but it can be pretty popular.
