Even when using the standard (single) trailer hook, I still miss some fish that short strike...especially when using a buzz bait. In an effort to prevent this, I’m experimenting with using a double hook from a hollow body frog. Not only does it add another hook but more importantly these 2 hooks are canted allowing for more hookups when the bass sideswipe at the bait. These hooks can be used with the skirt or without. I’m using shrink wrap pushed over the end of the frog hooks to hold in place. Best when used in open water. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2018/12/full-36377-240409-cbf0298c_bdce_43de_8117_de1680fc4d67.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2018/12/full-36377-240410-4c9645ca_bdba_42ee_8fd2_524f6e6e2e27.jpeg)

Sounds plausible.
Would turning them upside down be of benefit?

Good idea, esp for open water, as you say.

Nice job Jim. I like it, which is another Old School method for resolving the short strikes. This Frog hook has just come into play the last few years and has doubled the catch ratio for me in heavy grass. I believe you are on to something that will also increase the catches on spinner baits and buzz baits. It is not so much as there are two more hooks back there as they stick out a bit from the center line. I like the Shrink Tubing also as opposed to a free swing trailer hook. A single hook with free movement helps the hook up; but a large double hook needs to track inline which will cut down on the hangups. Thanks for sharing one of your excellent rigs.

An outstanding idea. I used to use the double hooks from old H&H spinners as trailer hooks, but the HB frog hooks are even better. I use the rubber tubing from old rubber skirts instead of shrink wrap. They also hold the trailer hook in place.

We use trailer hooks to avoid short strikes behind the skirt or bait. If we add another dressing or skirt(bait) over our trailer hook do we now need to add another “trailer hook” to avoid short strikes? Kinda joking.....kinda not!

I just add a trailer hook to the trailer hook.

Sounds plausible.
Would turning them upside down be of benefit? No. You would have more hang ups, more fowling of grass, plus you want the hooks in the roof of the mouth where there is more meat for less chance of hook dislodging. Also the way the gills connect closer to the mouth on the lower jaw, greater chance of hooking the gills and mortality.

In open water hang ups and grass wouldn’t be an issue. I can see your point about wanting to hook them in the roof versus the jaw and close to their gills but if they’re short striking enough you need a trailer hook then that shouldn’t be a big problem either should it?
