Just bought a “New boat for me” with a Yamaha HPDI. Everyone I’ve spoke to says I need to run Yamalube and I HAVE to use Yamaha RingFree. This raises questions to me that I hope I can get answered. 1. Does Yamalube not have the necessary ingredients that an additive is still required? 2. Is RingFree recommended for other motors (Mercury, Evenrude, etc.) 3. If the other manufacturers of 2 stroke oils meets or exceeds the requirements of Yamalube, is it acceptable? 4. If I use another brand of oil is RingFree still required. Thank you in advance for your responses.

I use Yamalube and ring free in in my Yamaha.
I know other people who don't.
Pretty much a personal choice.

Most folks stick with engine manufacturers products, especially during warranty period. Yamaha Ring Free and Mercury Quick Clean are used to help clean up injection system and engine carbon buildup in the motor. I doubt their is little if any difference in the products. As far as oil goes, I would stick with your engine manufacturers brand as that is what was most likely used by the previous owner and the motor is just used to that viscosity and additive blend. Don't neglect your fuel system. So many problems caused by ethanol fuel. Use a good fuel stabilizer at every fill up. Dosen't have to be the motor manufacturers product, although both Yamaha and Mercury make a good fuel stabilizer. You will get many differing opinions on which fuel stabilizer is best as their are a bunch of them out there.

Folks always want to save a buck and I'm all for that, but to a point, when you figure the cost of engines and repairs the cost of Ring-Free is not that bad for the piece of mind if nothing else

Thank you for everyone’s insight. Bear with me please, my last boat was 22 yrs ago and I was premixing fuel in 6 gallon tanks. This is a big step up for me. So with a fuel injected engine, is the oil from the reservoir introduced before or after the fuel injectors?

Best way to clean your motor is to run that sucka WFO for about 10 miles on each trip.

It finally clicked last night. I couldn't understand why Yamaha just didn't include the RingFree in its YamaLube. It's obviously a ratio issue. The amount of oil being injected is minute compared to the volume of gas going past the injectors. Makes sense now that the additive be mixed with the fuel. The thought has never crossed my mind to run the cheaper oils or go without the RingFree. This has been too large an investment for me to go cheap in regards to the motor.
