Buying a new trolling motor soon. Was wondering what the differences are between the ulterra and the ultrex.
The ONLY reason I’m switching is for spot lock. Is the ulterra spot lock the same as the ultrex?
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't trade for my Ulterra My son, wouldn't trade for his Ultrex
just depends on what steering system you want and if you want auto deploy

I’ve had both. The Ultrex was on 521 and when I got my 520 I thought I order another but was sent a Ulterra. Kept it and really enjoy it. Spot lock works the same on both. Spot lock is a game changer for me! Hit spot lock and leave front of boat without any worries. Same features on both except Ulterra will deploy, retract to stow and trim up or down by push of button. Ulterra does require mounting a little farther toward than Ultrex. Good luck in your choosing and I think you will enjoy either one!

I have both. The Ultrex is a tougher trolling motor and more suitable to bass fishing. Without going into allot of detail, my first was Ulterra on my old boat and now that I have Ultrex I would not recommend Ulterra for a bass boat mostly because of durability, Ulterra hangs over the bow of the boat where it can be damaged and sometimes you just want to grab a rope and jerk the TM out of the water. You have to use the remote to lift Ulterra.
Being successful is achieving that which you set out to accomplish!

I have the Ulterra and love it. I've never had a problem bass fishing Twok, Roberts or RC even in the trees. But you can't just go crashing into trees with either of them. Don't believe me go by Allstar and look at all the shafts being replaced.
Either one is a excellent choice but for me the Ulterra is the right one.
Good luck on your choice.

I’ll be the first to come clean. My Ultrex gets used....A LOT. thank goodness they extended the warranty, as I’m Gonna have a major issue real soon.
Issues thus far?
Cables broke Foot switch for prop needs period adjustment Shaft has huge surface cracks in it Power switch to turn off the unit no longer works, thankfully it’s stuck “on” and I have the plug at the bow Prop shaft has about 3/4” for and aft play in it. Allowing the prop to wrap weeds a lot Prop shaft seems to eventually just fall out. Spot lock releases randomly. Not often though.
I still wouldn’t take another TM besides an Ultrex. I’m a glutton for punishment.

They are both electric steer. The cables on the Ultrex are just there to controls the electric steer motor. The power steering is about as nice as the spot lock.

I will add, if you are gonna install it yourself, keep in mind that it is an absolute slobber knocker to mount a transducer on an Ulterra. TRUST ME.

I purchased the Ultrex and love it. Wasn't up for the self deploy, just something else to go wrong.

,,,, Dang guys ,,,, I have had my Ulterra for over 2 years now without a single issue as y'all describe. I wouldn't take for my Ulterra and the auto deploy and stow.

When I had a terrova same as ulterra foot pedal I only ever used the remote, the pedal was almost worthless to me, it was awkward and delayed vs a cable steer... I dont miss that thing at all compared to a ultrex and I also like being able to pull my unit up as needed as well as stick a 2x4 under it if I want it real shallow just breaking the surface with the prop.
