I just upgraded my electronics to a Solix with "MEGA" side imaging. I seems like when you have the frequency set to MEGA (1.2 MHs) the range is pretty limited. I have only tested the unit on Hubbard. I know that water clarity effects the range. When the depth get over 30-40 I start losing the bottom. When it is working the clarity is great but I have to switch to a lower frequency setting in deeper water.
Is this normal? Are there additional setting I can use? Are there any online tutorials/resources you can recommend?
Thanks, Jeff

I've never been really pleased with side scan in anything deeper than about 25'. Ive got mega on my helix. the shallower you are the better the return is going to be. that's just my observation, I bet there are people who actually know what the deal is who can chime in.

Hey Jeff,
Yes, what you are noticing is normal and can be very confusing for people coming into MEGA from a standard helix unit.
The high frequency gives extreme clarity in close proximity yet loses its ability to see past about 50 foot.
For general scanning switch back to 455 kHz... which will allow you to scan up to 150 feet for general hunting for fish and structure.
The mega is useful once you find a piece of structure you want to get detail on. For example A brush pile, or school of fish, etc.
It can be confusing But you need to use this unit mostly in 455 kHz to be able to see clearly out to 150 feet.

This one of the improvememts with the new Solix Gen 2 and Helix Gen3. The Gen 2 Solix will also have a new menu system. The mega imaging range will be increased to 200' from the current 125' from side to side ( a total of 400'from one side to the other) along with improved 2d performance with the low Q dual spectrum transducers

Hey Guys - thanks for the info. Seems like a really good unit so far. The "Link" to the trolling motor is super cool.

Mike is right, Im running a helix mega as well. if im scanning for striper im running 455khz at 120 ft and that works best for me. the only time I use the mega is when scanning brush and dcoks for crappie, and that is never more than 60 ft per side.
