Any of you guys have any advice or tips for a rookie trout chaser? I've caught some before randomly, but never targeted any. Gonna change that this winter. I plan on using spinning tackle, as i have no experience with fly fishing, and I plan on hitting the Brazos, Guadalupe, and various community lake stocking locations. Other than an ultralight spinning rod & reel, & a few panther martin, & assorted other makers, rooster tail type lures that I already have, not sure what else i should grab for the tackle box to help me catch some fish for the fridge. Any pointers are welcome and appreciated. You covered the most popular lures but I will add canned corn and pink salmon eggs on a small hook. If no one else is around throw a bit of corn into the water and then cast into that spot. Alot like carp fishing as well. Bad advice on throwing corn in the water, against the law, hefty fine! Never heard of that...couldn't find anything on it...I have done this in many lakes, rivers, and ponds in Texas...I usually do this in the form of fermented corn or sorghum, but have done it with unfermented corn for carp/buffalo. The game wardens who have inspected me with those on board and while using them, must not have been aware either.

Many states with trout fishing (stocked or native) prohibit chumming, but I don't think that Texas has a law or regulation against it. But I could be wrong.

Tried twice last year in the Houston area. Once the cormorants found them it was over. They ate them all. Waste of time.

They would dump 1200 8-9 inch fish into a 5 acre city pond for the kids to catch and what not...within 2 days the cormorants ate 1000 of them. They still do it. Amazing the these birds are protected as if they are uncommon. Corn as stated is the best way I ever caught them. On the bottom as if you are carp fishing. No weight.

What's up with the Sunday and Monday stockings? Are they trying to give the non-working folks a head start?

Show a link to that law please. Not allowed on 2 sections (trophy zone) of the Guadalupe river for bait. Says you must use artificial but doesn't say you cant chum as previous poster suggested. https://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/management/stocking/guadalupe.phtml

I figured suggesting the use of corn would ruffle some feathers. It's like saying you use water dogs on Lake Fork or something.

why not stock something that will live year round,..waste of money. Being that these trout are released into public park ponds / lakes, the fish are gone within a few weeks if that long. I've seen people lined up nearly shoulder to shoulder, especially when someone catches one. comorants like them also we get Randol Mill Park & Kennydale tons of fun

I have had good luck using small hook, size 10 salmon egg hook, covered in power bait trout nibble. Use 4 or 6# line with the minimum amount of weight you can get by with. I use a couple really small split shot spaced apart on the line so the trout does not pick up more than one at a time. I also use a long crappie rod so I can cast easily with little weight and a good distance. Let sit on the bottom and watch the line or rod tip for any bites. Would rarely feel the bite. Have seen others use corn with good success.

They stock on Friday and post a Sunday date. TPWD stockers do not work on Saturdays or Sundays. The Sunday dates are usually to protect an event, usually a kid fish, on Saturday. All the retired regulars knew this and we used to show up on Friday afternoon whenever a weekend date was shown. Then TPWD started posting "No Fishing" signs on the ponds after the stocking until after the special event. I always thought it was petty of them. The number of fish caught on Friday by a bunch of old farts was trivial compared to the number of fish stocked.

I work a full time job and work weekends so why assume it's to benefit the unemployed? I prefer the Monday Tuesday stockings personally....TPWD, if you're reading, more of those please!!!
