Im just an eater fisherman thats new to the game. After watching a Danny King video he said that he uses 20lb. Suffix. If I were to hang Mr. Big, would I have a snowballs chance in landing the fish? I also looked for the Danny King signature rod that he spoke of. Cant find one. Any suggestions for a nominal priced rod?

ProAngler Med Rods. Rippin Lips Medium Rods. 20 lb is Plenty for Bigguns. You could run 12-14 lb mono for Eaters. But Run heavier Hook leader line. 40-50 lb for bigguns. 20-25 lb for eaters. Rippin Lips On Amazon

My PB too date on 20# line is 46lbs. I'll even use 17# for casting distance. I'll beef up my rig with heavy leader material, like 40-50. Even have 60-80 lb line for leader, but it hardly ever gets used.. Pro Angler Tackle
I'd Tack That!!

If you want more Budget Friendly get Berkeley Big Game Medium Rods from Walmart. Pair them with Quantum Optix 40 spinning reel. Will still handle a Big Fish if you play the fish right. Spool with 14 lb Suffix mono with 20-25 lb mono hook leaders.

Or the ProCat Rods from Academy paired with Shimano Sienna 40 reels. I dont like the reels on the ProCat combos or the Ugly stick combos. Or Cabelas Whupoin Stick Combos - Rods are comparable to Ugly Sticks and Reels are Decent. Cabelas Whuppin Stick Combo 7

I like that Berkeley Big Game in Medium also. I have a 6000 with 20 lb hiviz orange line on it and have never felt under-gunned. I also have a ugly stick Tiger and honestly like the softer tip on the Berkeley. I was raised on the coast and I used 14lb for red fish on the flats and caught reds that were 4 feet long. I was never broke off just had my line cut a few times on oyster reefs. I've never had a cat take off and run like a big redfish so a 20lb is plenty.
You know that old saying "Some people march to the beat of a different drummer."? I don't listen to a drum at all and have meandered through life instead of marching.

If you get a rod that has eyelet inserts do not hook your hook through the eyelet when storing or transporting -it can damage the inserts or cause them to come loose. hook it behind the eyelet on the legs or hook it in hook keeper down by the reel.

I've caught a 16lbs carp on 6lbs test mono before. You can catch huge catfish on 20lbs line if you use your drag properly.
Personally, I target big blues and I never want to even come close to a monster breaking my line so I use 50lbs braid exclusively. Can't remember the last time I had a fish break my line, it's not even something I really think about anymore.
