On the spinning reel when I am using a long shock leader the knot will cause drag on line below it on the spool when line is going out so do not cast as far. I found that when reeling in if I stop right before the knot goes on the spool and then force the knot to the bottom of the spool I do not have this occur.

I learned this knot from my saltwater friends that fish for Tarpon. Takes about 30 seconds to tie, has never failed on me & you can trim it close. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDxGy3Nld2g

FG hands down if you have the patience to learn to tie it.

I like the Albright knot for braid to fluoro or mono then I reel on 30-40 feet of fluoro. Never had an issue with the knot hanging in the guides.

Another vote for FG. It's fool proof and not as big of a pita once you practice. It's the first combo knot I haven't had to worry about.

thanks for all the replies on this; the forum is really helpful. I'm going to check every knot that was recommended, and try the "trim it closer" and use super glue on the alberto knot.

Two knots stand out for me as the mono or fluoro tag end points toward the reel when the knot is complete (the braid tag end faces the lure). Therefore, no way the stiff tag end of the mono/fluro is going to snag the guides on the cast. Also both of the knots are very small. The AG knot is the smallest of the two (smallest of all the braid to mono/fluro knots) , very strong, but takes some practive to master. The other knot is still very small and strong easy to tie--"J-knot". The illustraions of the J knot show making 3 passes--I do 5 passes. Both of these knot are a type of weave, therefore, very strong. I use the AG when I am not in a rush, and the J knot the rest of the time. No failures with either knot. I have tried all the others, but these two stand out.

I only do it for spinning rods. The lighter line has less issues like this.

I do a double uni knot but the crazy Alberto knot looks a bit easier to tie so I'll be trying that out.

Double uni, but don't go crazy with the number of wraps. 3-4 is fine. Trim it CLOSE. No problems for me even on rods with microguides.

That's a neat knot. Basically a uni over doubled leader. I'll have to try it out.
