I've never really dedicated 100% to crappie fishing and wanna start doing it more of it rather then the occasional catching them while bass fishing. Ive heard there is a good population on Placid and I live pretty close so it my lake of choice at the moment, any tips on where I should be looking for them to be hanging out at? Bait choice? I plan on hopefully finding some minnows near by.

Thanks

I have found them both upriver and downriver from the IH10 ramp. Find submerged brush piles or tree laydowns.. Also try the bridge pillars, upriver Hwy 78 and train bridge. Downriver at HWY 90 bridge. I prefer minnows but have also used jigs. The closet minnows would be the Bait and Brew in McQueeny. It's a bar with a bait shop. Opens late like around 10am. I would call them to make sure they are still open. I haven't patronized them in quite some time as 10 am is way too late for me. 830-557-6073

Thanks! That's where I was planning to get my bait from unless I head up 306 to Canyon. Gonna give it a shot and will report how I do.

As wgpj mentioned, earlier, the best place to locate and target crappie is brushpiles and laydowns. This time of year, the bridge also produces fairly good as well. If you are running sidescan, don't overlook the docks as well. There are some good plies in front of those docks.

Great info. I keep meaning to bring my father's flat bottom back from Dallas to fish Lake Placid since I live about 5 minutes from the I10 ramp. This gives me more incentive. He upgraded to a nice Xpress boat and doesn't have use for it anymore. I've always been discouraged by the lake of large lakes close to the New Braunfels area compared to where I was raised. North Texas has a ton of them to choose from.

Well I guess you didn't catch any crappie because I haven't heard anything.

Had a good time, I caught a lot of fish which included a 4 lbs bass and some small channel cats and I also learned a lot. I did stop in at the Bait and Brew Ice House to pick up minnows which caught most of my fish but also caught them on pink/white crappie jigs that I've had for about 8 yrs sitting in the corner of my tackle storage. I stumble on a couple of brush piles and fish the bridge pilings. My fuse box had some corroded terminals which wouldn't allow me to turn my main graph on to scan docks looking for brush so i just kept it simple.

-Fish came out 20-28 ft of water
-water temp 62-64
