I am looking for recommendations on buying a fly rod case that will hold 3 - 4 rods/reels/etc. I want to use it as an airline carry-on. I've seen ones from $39 - $140. So it would be nice to get the best case for the price. Durable, functional, good carry-on. I currently have a backpack (I also use for hiking) that I use as a carry-on with two rod tubes. This works okay on the plane, but I think a case might work better.

I'll tell you what I do that works for me:
Invest in a quality duffel style bag heavy duty w/heavy duty zippers that has a false bottom in which you can easily pack three or four rod tubes. I guess you could even get 5 in mine but I never need that many on a trip. I fill in the false bottom with a few clothes around the rod tubes, then put my other stuff including waders and boots and reels and tackle bag etc. above them. Never had a problem and that bag of mine has been all over the World and back again several times.
I used to have a lot of problems with airlines re rod cases. They would insist on removing the locks, on occasion removing (ie stealing) a fly rod, and even loosing the case until way into the fishing trip. No more. I pack 'em in the false bottom of my bag (requires about 30 or 31 inches clearance) and never worry about them.

I have an Orvis travel case that will hold at least five rods in their sock. Plus reels and other small items. They say it will carry on airlines but I have not had an opportunity to check it out. It does keep them secure and is convenient keeping all my stuff together for a quick outing.

Don't worry about the mule, just load the cart
