be careful during severe weather. A 23 yo man was killed in cameron by lightning while fishing a stock tank in cameron yesterday. Today a 28 woman was killed by lightning at the tradinghouse creek boat ramp.

Keep in mind that lightning can strike very far away from the main storm. I believe the rule is wait 15 minutes after the last time you hear thunder and then you're ok. We had a lightning strike in the neighborhood last night nearly 45 minutes after the heavy part of the storm passed. Got my attention!

I fear the lightning more then any other weather phenomenon. When I was about ten, I saw a kid just after he was hit. Holes in his feet and the steel bead chain he was wearing around his neck had burned into his skin. I've seen whole mountainsides in Southern AZ devoid of any wildlife because the area was hit so often.

The scariest lightning strike I've ever seen is when there was NO storm near, and the lightning came from just the normal (ok maybe they were a little thicker than normal, but still no rain) puffy clouds you see in summer. This was at about 4 PM, there was no storm near, or none forming that night...

On the Discovery Channel a report that a cyclist was hit by lightning as far away as 20+ miles from the nearest cloud. My brother was hit by lighning 5 years ago and he says he still has ringing in his ears and head and neck pains still.

Yep, lightning is dangerous. I don't mind storms but will not get out where this stuff might get me. It struck a very large Oak tree next to the house a few years ago. Three days later the leaves had fallen off and it died. Boys, I aint as strong as that big Oak. scared

If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightining.

What do the pro anglers do with $100,000 on the line? i seen some of them laying on the deck fishing. If your on the lake do you head for the nearest boat house or for the trees? Nothing worse than lightning, you cant see it coming!!

What gets me is the people who think lightning cannot get through the rubber or whatever they have between them and the ground, ignoring the fact that it just jumped 5 miles through air to get there.

Keep your VHF on, you can hear these things coming in advance.

When I was in the Army I saw a fellow sergeant get knocked out of his combat boots that melted to the pavement as the Hum-V he leaning against was struck. He was knocked out for a while and thankfully survived, but had scars to prove it. I'll never mess around with lightning. I could barely get those boots off when they were unlaced much less have something throw me right out of them.

That's why they call it fishing and not catching!

Ask Randy Howell, he was zapped by lightning during the Potomac Clash last summer while he was reeling in a bass. It knocked him and the co-angler flat on the deck.
