Son's 2000 Silverado cratered the rear axle. Makes loud banging, clanking when turning. Anyone know of a place that rebuilds them or would it just be best to go the wrecking yard route and swap the whole thing ourselves.

It depends on the damage done and to what extent. At my shop we would take the cover off and inspect the differential to see what's broken and price out both options. If it is more than just bearings and seals, It's usually more cost effective to just find a low mileage assembly.

I'm assuming there is nothing worth saving. Going straight, no noise, turning, it sounds like bowling balls rolling around in the bed and it's jerks. We did take out the drive shaft and towed it home. He didn't mention it making any noise then.

I had a 2000 that had the same issue. I think I burned it up getting stuck in the mud fairly often. The repair was about $500.

Don�t bother trying to rebuild. It�s not a hard swap if you know how to turn a wrench.

What size truck? 2 wheel drive?

I got a half ton 6 jug for sale.

Id just swap it out with one from a yard. That being said I have had 3 chevy 1500s and have not had a rear end go out. 210xxx,290xxx and current one has 315xxx with no issues.
