I've been buying and using E15 since QuickTrip and Racetrack started selling it last year. No difference in performance and typically $0.07 cheaper than regular.
E85 on the other hand runs like carp.... I tried it in a flex fuel (E85) rental and could not wait to burn it through and replace it with E15.
YMMV.......

YMMV....... You get worse mileage with E15 so there is no real savings.

What I don't get is the claim it is less MPG on E15, but eh octane rating is 88. If regular is 87 octane how can it be more efficient if there is a higher energy rating on the E-15?

E-85 and E-15 are not the same. E-85 is primarily alcohol, while E-15 will 15% alcohol. E-10 is miserable in small gas engines and outboards, E-15 will only be worse. That's just for the little engines.
Any gas mileage gains in your personal vehicles you enjoy now will be tested when E-15 hits the market. Alcohol content goes up, mileage comes down. I drive a flex fuel vehicle for my company and they have forbidden us from using E-85 even though it is the cheapest gas out there. That's because regardless of the savings at the pump, the gas mileage sucks so bad that it winds up costing more to run a fleet on E-85.

If people had written their Congressmen and Congresswomen, this could have been avoided. But 99% of people would rather just complain on message boards and slam the folks that tried to spread the word it was coming. So bring it on! We deserve it.

It takes 1.5 gallons of pure ethanol to get the same BTU content in one gallon of regular unleaded. I guess a person could do the math but common sense tells me that mileage wise E85 would completely suck and E15 is going to be worse than E10.
I haven't personally tested it but would think that MPG cost wise it probably actually costs a little more to run E15 over E10. A really careful and accurate MPG test over 3 or 4 tankfulls in similar driving should likely prove the math I would think.

sMy truck is a 'flex fuel' vehicle that supposedly can handle E85 (I have no idea what it would run like on that fuel). I've used E15 at QT for several consecutive fillups. Mileage is slightly lower than regular fuel, but the price is cheaper, so it seemed like I was getting the same mileage for the money.
But I hate to think of running that stuff through a motorcycle or a boat.
*edit* I may do this again and keep note of the exact fuel cost, mileage etc, since I know what my normal average mpg is on the truck with normal fuel.

It is not higher energy. Octane is the anti knock rating. Correct on what higher octane rating is for. I'm an old, but I had a few cars when I was younger that would knock like crazy and probably burn up the pistons on a steady diet of regular leaded gas. Had to run nothing but Ethyl aka Hi Test in those guys. A strange thing I did notice maybe 5 or 10 years ago that my Nissan Pathfinder it was a straight even wash on running regular unleaded or mid grade. It was exact same cost per mile. I can't recall if I tested the premium grade or not. I thought that was strange because it wasn't just the octane that was causing that increase in mileage. They claim better cleaning additives so maybe that improved the energy content somehow. Something did.

"The Environmental Protection Agency currently has a rule in place preventing the sale of so-called E15 fuel, which contains 15 percent ethanol, between June 1 and Sept. 15."

There are some publications that calculate the % drop in fuel efficiency as the ethanol content in increased. I haven't looked at this stuff for a while. If memory serves, there is a sweet spot where your mpg with ethanol blends is really close to regular gasoline. It varied by vehicle but somewhere between 20 and 40% ethanol was the magic number. Up at 85% and the mpg had a dramatic drop. I guess the most poignant stat to me was the amount of conventional fuel it takes to distill a gallon of ethanol. By the time the farmers plant and harvest, and then the food is boiled 3 times in the triple distillation process, it burns the equivalent of 2 gallons of gasoline for every gallon of ethanol made. Edit: Found one of the old reports. http://www.energyresourcefulness.org/Fuels
