Can anyone take a look at this piston and tell what went wrong for me? The only thing that is making sense to me is that the rings would no longer retract into the piston grooves, and the ring caught and broke. I also had to replace the other two pistons for the same problem. They werent really scuffed just wore out.
Thanks for any ideas

Looks like a ring stuck. Do you run ring free

It is a 50hp Yamaha of a friend of mine. The carbon deposits werent terrible, but there was quite a bit built up in the ring grooves. Im just trying to make sure it doesnt fail again from a problem I didnt see. Carb on that cylinder looked very clean when I put a kit in it.
Thanks

Carbon build up. A 2 cycles worst enemy. Use Sea Foam or ring free fuel additive.

Looks like bottom ring hung in a port and snapped the ring lands. Could have been several causes, but carbon build-up is one of them.

I run Mercury Quickleen in all my gas engines, from autos to chainsaws. Helps keep injectors clean and combustion chambers from carbon build-up.
