Im retired LEO and also did hiring and recruiting for my PD. Id suggest he go on ride alongs with each agency hes considering. Some peace officers are just security guards (think TSA), others protect the border and chase illegals, game wardens pretty much only handle misdemeanor crimes and (from a friend who is a warden) doesnt like hunting or fishing anymore because its his work. Troopers pretty much write tickets the majority of their time (I also did their pre-employment backgrounds), city cops (depending on agency) handles all kinds of things. Bigger agencies have their patrol officers just handle calls and other smaller agencies may have their officers actually investigate crimes, or be more involved with community activities. Also, theres is a book written by two former co-workers on what steps one can take to get hired in law enforcement (check Amazon, I dont want to name the book on TFF) that is spot on that helps. PM me if youd like him to talk over the phone and I can give more information. He really should know exactly what hes getting into before his career investment. Good luck

Just Google 'why is a college degree required for peace officers' and you will find several articles that cite empirical studies list positive differences in the work of college educated peace officers vs. Peace officers w/out college degrees. It has nothing to do with calculus per se.

All of those articles center around perceived brutality and racist behavior by police....body cameras have put 99% of that as clearly a lie....not against having a degree as I got one later in life, but it did not have anything to do with being a better street police officer I promise you that! Very few bachelor degrees are more useless in the real world than a "criminal justice" degree.

I hate to keep beating this drum, but, Fed LEO is the way to go if he already has 10 years of military time. As a gun carrying fed, he can retire at age 50 with 20 years of "gun totin" time. That would be 30 years worth of credit towards retirement. State or cities cannot beat the retirement benefits. But, to each his own.

A lot of agencies will allow 4+ years of active duty military in lieu of college hours. If he goes DPS, he will likely beplaced along the border because thats where they need help. Yes, he will make good money as DOS, but part of that is due to the fact they work 50 hours per week mandatory.

My suggestion, have him ride out with a few agencies, big and small. DPD is always hiring. We now offer a $60,000 starting pay, and still have a better retirement than TMRS. Yes, a patrol officer stays busy here, but we have fun doing it. No way I could work for a smaller department with less officers and less call load. If he wants exposure and a better chance of moving to detective, then DPD is a great place to work.

Most powerful LEO in the State. Really, doesn't need a warrant if he thinks you possess one of his precious animals illegally.

Not at all true. They still have to obey by the same laws as LEOs across the state and the nation. They are not above the US Constitution or the Bill of Rights.

Don't any of those mention above are allowed to ask about Immigration Status of a person, nor arrest them for not carrying a Greencard.
