Recently we have had a typical light summer bite. Hardly feel the bite or line goes slack on the fall. Yesterday we weren't getting much action so I decided to try my "Fall Technique". Namely big baits. Immediately started getting action from mostly big fish.

These are some of my favorite fall baits. The shad are bigger now and the fish seem to want a bigger meal. Most of the fish I cleaned last week were stuffed with shad up to 5" long.

This is what I used Yesterday. Had 8 over 1.5# plus lots of smaller fish. It's a Crazy Angler Magnum Pro Slab Commander in Texas Toast color.
To make it even better the fish hit it like they were angry at it. Really jarred your rod. Maybe the were afraid it would get away if they didn't kill it.

These are some I used last fall.

If you want some great action in the fall try big baits.

Ernest, I agree on the fish "slamming" the bigger baits for the same reason. I think that because they know it is bigger the have to attack it more aggressively to insure they catch it. I am still a couple weeks away from using my bigger arsenal. Tried a couple yesterday and caught a couple but not nearly what I did on the medium sized stuff. Below are a few of the larger profile baits I will be using. Some of them are saltwater baits that I have modified.

3" twin tail

3 1/2"-4" Modified Down South Lures

Hand ties that are in the 4" range. So far the "Neapolitan" jig has been the most productive.

Those big slab bandits and brush gliders are deadly in the fall.

Over the course of the last week, I have attempted to upsize, but to no avail. The fish have been readily taking tiny bait profiles, but ignored the larger baits. At some point, hopefully, they will get into the larger sizes, but I havent had any luck getting bit on the larger stuff, so far...but I keep trying and hoping...Ernest, .thanks for the heads up!

Great post. I got a good reminder a couple weeks ago at Lavon. I was trying to figure out what I was seeing on my graph. I dropped a 3/8oz slab down and got bit by a couple of 8" crappie.

You go big when you stick one
on and the crappie bite it.
They will either hit it or they won't.
Sometimes color matters on a bigger bait.

It was a shame they wouldn't bite for us on that hot n steamy morning, but looks like the bite has picked up. Good info on the larger baits for Fall. Looks like ya did very well. Hoping next time we'll see some of those hogs. fish

By mid Sept I will always start trying bigger baits. Water temp, length of day and other factors may trigger the fish to start the fall feeding frenzy. The feeding may wane back and forth on any given day and within any day. Let the fish tell you what they want.
