You will get lots of opinions on this.. I have one of Skeet Reese's drop shot rods.. have had it for about 10 years. Its a 7' rod, that is something like a medium with a fast tip. I've gotten used to the feel of it and like it a lot. I have used several reels over the years but now am using a Revo SX in a 40 size. Van Dam said he liked a 40 for that purpose, so I tried a Pfluger President and liked it. I got the Revo for my birthday and have only used it once.. but it feels really nice. I'm using Suffix 832 15lb braid in bright yellow color and use Segaur Invisix 8lb floro leader, joined with an improved Alberto knot. I like the Gamakatzu split shot drop shot hooks in 1/0 size.
Since you don't have to set the hook really hard, the medium with fast tip rod works really well for drop shot. Big bass for me on that drop shot rig is 6.5lbs and I never felt like I wasn't in control of the fish.

This setup will definitely keep your drop shot game on par with those that spend way more than necessary. Owner 1/0 Rig N hooks and round or finesse lead ds weights. If you need to purchase and save some dough holla at me..Well even make you some custom DropShot hooks...Thanks!

I have a Academy Ethos Nano medium light. 7'1". I use a Shimano Stradic Ci4 reel. I load the reel with 20lb Shimano yellow braid and use a 8 pound Fluorocarbon leader.

Works great, when I use it.

So I have 2 spinning rod set ups which I alternate use for drop shot and finesse fishing:

Dobyns Sierra 6'9" medium light w/Pfleuger Patriarch w/15lb yellow braid to 8lb fluoro leader

G-Rod 7' medium w/Shimano Ci4 w/20lb yellow braid to 10lb fluoro leader

Does anyone else use a light weight and slightly beefier set up similar to mine? Curious to hear some thoughts.

I used to, until I found out that the vertical presentation of drop shotting benefits from an underhung spinning rod, as well as the drag systems are usually superior on fixed spool reels. Often the drag, being very smooth and consistent on a spinning reel, makes the difference on landing larger fish vs losing them.
