What am I missing? I use a 7ft MH rod and 50 pound braid with a Concept Z baitcastser from 13 fishing. It is very rare I back lash when casting. What am I doing wrong?

That's what your thumb is for. Might try adjusting your magnets a little too.

Are you stopping the spool with your thumb before the bait hits the water? That's the key to getting a splash-less, virtually silent entry. And not getting a backlash.

You may also want to try a shallow-spooled reel. They don't hold as much line and are a lot easier to pitch with.

When you spooled your reel did you put a piece of tape around the spool?? Sometimes braid will slip at the knot and cause a backlash. When spoiling my braid I always tie my knot and put one piece of electric tape around the spool then reel all the line on. Might help you problem
Keep it RIL

I have been. I think when it hit the bottom that when it back lashes. As soon as my T-Rig, Fluke, Jig, etc. hits the water, I strip line with my thumb on the spool in order to let it sink straight down. Even free spooling I bet it pendulums slightly towards the boat. Also, if you think you have a back lash just from the lure hitting the bottom, what will happen if a fish grabs your lure and makes a run while it is free spooling? I strip line to let lure sink and then engage reel. In our past club tournament, 7/8 fish I caught were on the line when I engaged the reel and picked up my slack.

It is simple. - Hold your rod and jig straight out in front of you. - Push the button. - If the jig drops free spool; then tighten the knobs. - Get it to where you have to shake the rod to get it to fall. - This is where you start. - Now make adjustments allowing you to pitch, use your thumb, pull line to fish on slack line and then engage taking up slake to feel for weight. - Set the hook....

If it's backlashing towards the end of the pitch turn up the magnetic brakes. If it's happening at the beginning tighten spool tension slightly. You can back off of everything once your thumb is educated.
