I bought one and Im sort of disappointed. Ive been working on getting my skinning knives ready for deer season and I cant seem to get them very sharp. They are sharper but I cant get them hair shaving sharp. It sounds like it should simple but I guess there must be some tricks to it

Love mine. For every time you run it with the medium grit band, you need to use the honing band 5 or 6 times.

You can round off the point of your knife real quick using that thing so be careful. There are several youtube videos that give some detailed pointers.

Yes, there are some tricks to it. Sorry to say, I don't know them either.
Me experience is i can get some knives shaving sharp. Some I cant get to hardly cut hot butter.
Some of them seem to hold an edge way on longer and still skinning sharp if i leave the last tiny bit of sharpening to have a tiny amount of lines in it and not stropped on leather. In other words, I don't go for that smooth shaving sharp edge on some of them. Those suckers will cut the hell out of you still though.
I have a friend that can run a Worksharp on just about anything and his all seem to turn out great.

Use the proper guides, start out with medium grit band unless the blade is pretty nicked up then you'll have to start with course band. I do 10 strokes each side making sure blade is flat against guide, repeat twice. Move down to next grit (if medium grit, 10 strokes each side 3 times) Fine grit band, i only do 10 strokes each side. Concentrate on keeping the blade same height flat against guide. Just sharpen the edge, don't push the blade down against the band too far. Don't make your strokes too fast.....take your time...A guy from a cabelas demo would draw the blade about 4 second on a 6" blade each stroke.

I need to watch the you tube videos. I get pretty good sharpness for any use but I have rounded off a point or two.

Once I learned how to not round off the tip its the only sharpener I use anymore. Never had a problem getting my knives razor sharp with it.

After you do as much as possible on the machine use a steel then go with the leather strap.

Don't know how long they stayed sharp but the knife sharpenors that work in truck stops use a belt sander. There are YouTube videos that show you how

Work sharp plus ceramic sticks is how to get blades razor sharp. Keep the edge going with ceramic and you rarely have to use the work sharp.

Use one every day at work. I just keep the course belt on it. Run out knives through once or twice and they are plenty sharp for a days worth of cutting veg and stuff. Never bothered to get one razor sharp as I just dont want to spend the time when the coarse belt does good enough for what I need.

It is what I use now, all of my knives are razor sharp. If you want a real good one, go to House of Blades in Lake Worth and buy the one they make. Last time I checked it was $400. It is just like the one he uses to sharpen your knife when you come in. They finish it up with a leather strap and jeweler's rouge. I had one years ago that I bought for $180 and took it with me on a hunting trip. Ranch hand fell in love with it, so I gave it to him as a tip as they let me harvest 3 to 4 axis deer every year. Went back to House of Blades to get another one and they were $380

I have the Ken Onion and it works good, but I don't have the courage to put my custom knives on it yet. But I will with a little more practice.
