Acres of baitfish this evening. Why the world can I not catch fish? I am a bass fisherman and don’t know much about stripers. I have my gpaw with me and would like to figure these stupid things out. Any help? smile

Did you try top water baits?

Match the hatch - try lures the same size as the bait. This year there have been a couple of shad spawns and sometimes the fish prefer the little ones, easier to catch.

Were the shad just nosing the water or did you see them running for their lives?

Did you mark any fish under them?

In my experience , happy shad mean no active predators.

I fished Texoma last weekend. We were catching some on topwater lures in 6 to 10 feet of water in the late evening. Early morning we were catching them on live shad in 28 fow near the bottom and in 60 fow suspended at about 40 feet. The deep water we fished was west and NW of Grandpappy point. Around 7:30 am look for where the guides are fishing. We didn't catch a thing between about 10 am and 7 pm - strictly early and late is when we were seeing bites.

Randy try 4 inch swim baits in white or chartreuse early in the morning ... Then as the sun gets higher in the sky switch to slabs .Key in off flats ,and drop offs this time of year ...Knowing what to look for on the graph is a must .If you would like book me for a learning trip on your boat ,or mine ...I will help you speed up the learning curb! My number is in my signature.
